getting electricty without the mains?????

is there any way possible of growing without electricity?
so is there any other way of creating enough electricty in any way? the weather is not hot enough here so growing outdoors is not an option.

maybe in your windows.

only thing i can think would be to have a glass green house with a good size pile of compost. when the compost decomposes it give's off a good amount of heat and co2 so you would want to start the compost early so you actually have a pile produceing heat b4 you try to grow and this way you will have a nice organic fert so it would be a very versatile lump of rotting mass

you dont need a glass green house but yeah a green house is your only to grow in an area with out electricity*
you will need some power for fans and a swamp cooler.

Depends on your budget or your environment.

If saving money is the reason CFL's dont cost sod all to run, worth changing all your lights in your house then offset the cost of runing say 4 CFL's with the savings.

there are the traditional ways of generating juice in the 'back woods' cabin
one is buy a generator, drawbacks are you have to keep it filled with fuel, and some are pretty noticable, i.e. noise and fumes
then there are the green alternatives, batteries + solar panels, wind mills or such
drawbacks here are big time cost, and they are also quite noticeable, depends on the setting - would likely be fine for the back woods cabin grow

generator(s)? but thats millions of hastle and noise

cheers for the replys lads but i have no room for a green house. i have a camper van which i can convert for growing but i have no electricity supply.

generators cost to much run mate and solar panels and windmills dont produce enough electricity as iv already looked into it. any more suggestions?

is the camper a wreck? if it is, cut the centre out of the roof and replace with perspect sheet.... green house!

solar panels/wind mills can produce as much power as you want
just have to scale up
which of course costs plenty, and may be a detection hazard

say there is a stream nearby, and you want to have a go a making a mini -hydroelectric setup
that too is pricey, cheap power is what we are all looking for
solve that, and you can buy the property/grow setup of your choice in a MJ legal place

the thing is though im bsed in the uk and we dont really get much sun, especially now in the winter i dont think it would really work mate

to get a wind mill or solar power that can produce enough power, say even 1 or 2 thousand watts would cost over a grand to set up lol. not really an option mate

yeah, this is one of those tough problems
if you want a kilowatt of continuous power it makes it very hard to do on the cheap
but wind mills can be done pretty cheap with some compromises
there are small wind mill setups, basically DIY
they don't generate too much power, maybe a couple of hundred watts at max
but you can buy pretty cheap electric motors that can be converted to generators
these mills are not more 6-7 feet high, use cheap materials - there are a number of plans out there on the net
so build maybe 5 or so, add that with a modest battery setup
i looked into this for power generation in my home

how far is the camper from the house?

If you cant do a generator ( which is hard exspensive and stupid )

Look into building yourself a windmill, with a very very good dynamo, shoudl produce a decent amoutn fo electricity.

campervan is no where near my house mate, sounding like a windmill is my best option,

just that with wind mills, the other part of the cost is deep cycle storage batteries and inverter
these aren't cheap, if you DIY on the wind mills, the batteries/inverter will be the bigger part of the cost
so from the sounds of your budget, a kilowatt grow is not likely
talking 250 watt HPS, maybe smaller, all depends on how much you can afford

back to the drawing board i recon. I'm from uk 2 mate, i'd be thinking indoors at a minimum this time of year, will get cold in that camper once the lights go off.
