Germination Question!

If I were to soak a bunch of seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours, after that would I then plant it or germinate the seed? Through the any of the various techniques??
cheers! :peace:

Lots of different techniques, personally I soak then plant directly in soil about 1/4" deep. Use a seed starting soil or mild soil. Make sure there are no twigs or heavy soil clumps above where you plant the seed. Most pop the soil in 48 - 72 hours. 100% using this method with healthy/fresh seeds. Keep temps above 75 and putting pots on a heat mat helps.

lately I've been soaking in ph 6 water for a few hours then they tend to sink, in moist paper towel and they germ by next day.

Here is what has served me with almost 100% success rate:

I use root riot plugs in a heated propagator. I don't pre-soak my seeds or germ them in a paper towl.

1. I take a paper clip, straighten it out and poke it straight down through the root riot plug. This will give the tap root a nice canal to travel through.
2. I soak the root riot plugs in some ph 5.5-6 water for about a minute.
3. Squeeze the plugs so they are moist, not soaking wet.
4. Take a pair of tweezers and carefully put your seeds into the plugs, I like to put them pointy side down, asshole up. You could plant the seed anyway you want, up, down, sideways, it knows what to do and will orient itself.
5. Now that your seed is in the moist root riot plug, simply place it in your tray.
6. Put a heat mat under your propagator and the humidity dome on.
7. I put my T5's on them immediately, 20hrs on 4hrs off.

*check them at least once a day to make sure they plugs aren't drying out and if they are just pull the plug out and give it a good light misting.
*Your temps should be 75-85degrees and your RH should be 60%-90%
*Once they break ground and you can see a root or two coming through the plug, transplant into your prefered medium
*Also, once they break ground you can remove the humidity dome.

This mehtod has worked incredibly well for me. Long story short, I never 'pre' germinate using a paper towl and darkness. I use root riots in a heated propagator with almost 100% success rate. No need to worry about hurting the tap root or shocking it from doing so. Just touching that little tap root with a finger is enough to stress the plant and possibly even kill it. Hope this helps, it's just my opinion but it's the only way I do it now.

Here's what I do with pretty much 100% success: plant seed and go away on vaca. Come back 12 weeks later and the plants have been trimmed, dried, cured and jarred. It's like magic. I don't know how it works but I've been doing this for years and I wouldn't do it any other way.

I'm with Adjor:
I don't like to germ in a paper towel or anything like that. Go right into a medium, the way nature intended. If your using soil start them in soil. If you going hydro put them in rockwool or your favorite 'starter' style plug. I think the paper towel method actually slows things down, and the risks just aren't worth it. If you are starting with good genetics you shouldn't need to germinate them anyway, they should pop on their own fairly quickly. Even with bag seed it's never taken more than 6-7days to have a plant with it's first set of single blade leafs.

As for the dome, I only leave it on for the first 1-3 days, it hardly ever takes 3 days for them to break the surface and as soon as they do I take off the dome. Damping off isn't form the dome, it's from over watering.

This is MUCH easier with rockwool, and I don't advise using rockwool for seeds with the humidity dome. Just a couple of the 1" cubes with the dome on and sometimes I wouldn't have to water again for almost 5 days. I killed many seedlings form overwatering rockwool cubes. With the root riots, even with the dome I usually have to give them a light misting once a day.

Rockwool can also do some funky things with ph that aren't easy for a newbie to correct. My vote is always for root riots, rapid rooter, straight coco, or a nice soil mix if thats your twist, in a heated propagator for at least the first 48hrs. The heat and moisture are the two signals to start growing. Even with soil, a little heat will dramatically speed things up and increase your success rate. It's not needed but I believe it's worth every penny, especially if you like growing from seeds.

A tray, a dome, a heat mat, and your preffred medium/starter plugs will run you less then 50 bucks and will save you not only headaches but time as well. Some of the best $50.00 I ever spent, and now I only have to buy the plugs when I run out. Put seeds in plugs or medium, put in propagator, take dome off as soon as the break ground. It's almost fool proof.

I also use the heated propagator and root riots with clonex gel to root my clones, I usually have roots in 7-10days.
