Germi/seedling/soil

I want to know what kind of soil to use to germ my seeds in , is seedling starter soil ok or what do you guys recomend, I want to use red solo cups till good rooting is established and then transplant in to hydro/ hydroton as the medium. ,I want to do it this way because I just cant get the hang of starter plugs or rockwool my death rate is high. I know there will be some shock from the transplant,but feel I would be better off at this point,Im thinking 8 seeds this round 4 to hydro and 4 to soil just as a insurance clause. Please help Im medium handicaped.

I cannot speak to the hydo aspect but I use my standard grow soil once I have germinated the seeds in moist paper towel.
