Garage setup - too hot??

Hornchen

Hello everyone,
Looking at setting up my first 'real' grow and really more into the science and process and getting extreme quality rather than producing high quantity. I have a perfect spot in my garage ( stealth setup ) which is about 14" deep, 18" wide and 27" tall - I have the drawing and plans but as I walked out into the garage I thought - holy sh!t its hot ( over 100 deg at 8pm )

Is this going to cook any potential babies? I know the stealth setup is going to increase the heat naturally but i'm worried that even with proper ventilation I am still going to have an issue. Sigh. Perhaps back to the drawing board haha!

Thank you in advance for any help,
Hornchen

get an air conditioner and cool down the garage! then run lights//ect mostly at night to keep heat down.

I've see full grown plants survive outside at roughly 120 degrees, but that's the extreme. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your plants.

Thats what I was figuring. Darn! LOL - well as Buds said, maybe I'll take my time and just have it ready for Autumn. I have an old PC case but I'm worried that might be too small.

Half the fun is planning. . . right?? : )

Thank you again everyone

Use 2" rigid foam to insulate the grow space. That will keep the heat out. Install a small fan to bring cooler air into the grow space. Pull the intake air from the north side of the garage or at least the shadiest side possible. The smaller the space you provide and still maintain enough room to grow, the more efficiently the whole process will run. You can't use an AC unit to cool a garage. It won't work as you are trying to put out a forest fire with a garden hose. Even if you are successful cooling an un-insulated drafty garage the bill for doing this will choke you. This should work fine for a plant or two. Actually more is possible but slightly more complex. If you have any other questions about building a grow room, I will do what I can to help. Hope this works for ya. Good luck

nobody ever said the garage was uninsulated and drafty!!!!!!! And you CAN use a portable a.c / dehumidifier to cool a garage quite efficently if set up rite so dont listen to people that say "you cant do that" " its like putting a forest fire out with a garden hose" which could be done as well it just depends on the forest fire. any other questions????????

hmm - now you all have me debating on what to do! Thinking I might go with the PC stealth to get back into it - then take my time and do the garage set up correctly. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and upload them, see if you all might be able to help me brain storm.

OK, you can cool a garage with an ac unit. You could cool it with ice cubes also, just saying it's cost prohibitive that's all
Don't get you're panties in a bunch.

I agree - I have a 2 car garage that is about 20 feet deeper than normal and it also is a vaulted ceiling. Not drafty - but would simply kill me cooling costs. Perhaps a way to cool just the box? I think the best idea is going to be take my time, slowly invest in the box and just plan on the summer months being my 'off season'.

Here is the cabinet in question interior dimensions 22" long x 19" deep by 27" tall - Hopefully enough room for 1 or 2?

For ventilation I'm thinking numerous fans across the top, perhaps 3 pulling and 3 pushing ( 4 corners and 2 in middle ) with a little carbon idea I have going for smell.

Do you all think this would be a doable project or too far out there?

Thank you in advance,

i do construction work and i have never seen a garage that is insulated unless the homeowner is willing to shell out the money. contractors dont insulate a garage for a reason. and if its not insulated i would listen to doser

I grow in a tent in my garage and bring the intake through the wall to inside my house. This gives me cooled air and when my garage is at 100 my tent is around 80.
Your space is a bit small but have fun growing!

hmm - thats what I'm worried about. Heating isn't going to be too much of an issue ( we have portable heaters in the garage ) but cooling will def be... fun.

I am wanting to do 1 or 2 plants tops - I've seen the PC stealth boxes and kinda feel bad your not allowing the plant to expand. Quality over Quantity is my goal right now : )

Ok if you dont have A/C dont grow in the summer end of story case closed i dont know why people are even debating this.... Also in your first post you said you want to do it right so why you using that little cabinet?? why not do it right and get a decent grow.......That little cab wont yield you anything but peanuts.....SO if you only want to grow just for fun like a hobby like a chea pet then ya the cab will Be great but if you want to grow to yield actual product to sustain your habbit for a year or more then you need to do it right that means atleast a 4x4x7 grow space and you talkin atleast close to 1000 in cost do do it right........

And yes people will say you dont need a 1000 and you can get it done for way less but thats really just BS to do it RIGHT and set everything up properly with the proper vent system and everyting lights nutes grow box all the little things everyone always leaves out when saying what you need it will add up to about 1000 bucks....... I know people dont like to hear that they want to hear that they can grow with great results using a shoe box and 250 bucks but its not true and the people who try and tell you that are newbs

I'm growing in my shed and there's no a/c unit in it. Outside temps have have been 80-100 degrees and my plants are doing great. All that I have is a 8" fan in the 27" x 36" x 84" grow box. However, I do agree that if it is too hot for you then it's too hot for plants. Keep in mind that moving air is cooler air. You could always try just a few plants and see how they do.

Been giving it a little more thought - as many of you have said summer grow in the garage - not so much. Autumn? Perhaps. Footclan - didn't mean to piss in your cheerios with my questions. At the very beginning I said I figured it would be too hot but was wondering on options ( ventilation, portable ac units, etc ). I'm not looking at supporting myself for a year or more, I am wanting to focus my entire attention on 1 or 2 individual plants and experiment and hone my green thumb. My wife and I are moving to Colorado in a few years and I am wanting to become a caregiver farmer, what better way to build my portfolio and resume.

When the smoke clears, I think I'm just going to take my time, build this box to what I think may be right and experiment. Thats the fun part!

Thank you again everyone

You can't grow in the summer without AC, can't you read. Better go out and kill all your plants because they are all just a figment of your imagination and if you smoke imagination who knows what will happen. I could put you into an altered state.

nothing wrong witha pc grow box. I got nearly an ounce out of one and was rushed, i know I couldve got more... you said u were focused on quality? Well there you go; do your one plant and nuture it.
that said, if i can grow on ounce in a pc box, you can def do summn with that cab you got in the pix. idk bout HID lightintg in there, you will def need serious vent; try LED, t5 or cfl. Cfl's still produce a good amoutn of heat and can heat up a space, but not nearly as much as a LED or T5.
if you do a pc box, you caa have inside the a/c house and odor control is very inexpensive with micro grows.

if you do go with a micro grow or still decide to grow in that cab, lean towards an auto.. make life 10x easier.

Have you thought about investing in a couple of the the cooling pads they make fore laptops and xboxs? If you get the nice ones they actual blow cooled or cold air. Just a thought.
