I controlled my gnat problem with orange dish soap and then a spray of Bug Gone. The combination did the trick....although I sill see them occasionally. They are both easy to kill and extremely hardy. Strange combination.

Insecticidal soap is USELESS, these gnats are not easy to kill and VERY hardy... i already gave them a light dose of gnatrol to see if it would fuck up my babies. it didnt hurt the plants but the gnats are still running around like they own my soil, so i uped the dosage to 1 1/2 tsp. per gallon

The dish soap is to control the adult population....and then you need something to get to the off spring that will inevitably keep driving you crazy. I don't do soil....but I've heard that you should just let it dry out...or cover the top layer with sand....or cover it with a paper plate to kill the larvae. Any of the 3 or all 3 should work for you.

very easy for you to say.... The Gnatrol contains a natural bacteria or some shit that eats the larva, ive got gatorade and dish soap in little styrofoam cups for the adults. im praying to god its going to kill these little mother fuckers.

and a paper plate? sand? bro c'mon.... there are holes in the bottoms of my pots for drainage this is also a fav. place for these devil gnats to hide. not to mention that sand might block the roots gas exchange

Sand will work, diamatacious earth is best. Chances are they're acting like they own the soil because, well they do. Thanks miracle grow. I alternate a pyrithium based insecticide with botanical oils (neem, mite x, etc) in unison with diamatacious earth, and they don't stand a chance

I'm a noob using soil....has anyone here had any good success with any of these methods lately? I'm just noticing some kind of gnats or fruit flies buzzing around my crops (indoors). Also, anyone happen to have a link or know of a sticky w/ pics of all the bugs that we may have to deal with? Thanks.

I guess I got some tough gnats, because when I used hotshot no pest strips to fight some mites, the gnats just kept going like nothing was wrong. (I had four no pest strips in the room, and they did kill the mites).

They're hard to get rid of. I'd recommend doing a spray (maybe like the 'don't bug me' or something) and yellow sticky traps for the adults, along with some sort of BT watering treatment for the larvae at the same time.

A few things to control gnats:

1st: Make sure you are getting air flow to the bottom of your plants. You need to try and get the soil dried out at the top.
2nd: You can hit the top with a very dilute bleach solution but I wouldn't do that in soil.. I would use Azamax and do a soil drench. If the problem is real bad, you can foliate it.
3rd: place sand on the top of your grow medium. The adults can't burrow into it and lay their eggs. Any eggs in the soil when they hatch, they won't be able to come out through the soil, and your azamax drench will kill them..
4th: place up some sticky traps to monitor the populations and make sure you are keeping them under control.

If you have wet soggy medium, you will get gnats.. If you don't get enough light and airflow on your medium, it will stay moist and soggy. Some the denser your cannopy, the bigger the gnat problem can be....

dude i use stuff called GoGnats from the local hydro store... ive used it in hydro and in soil with great results. just mix it in with your water and it makes it so the larvae in the soil not be able to eat... or shit... so i think they just like pop or something. but it works great. and if you have mites/thrips you can use it in a foliar spray that works damn well too

Hotshot no pest strips DO NOT WORK for GNATS - in my situation at least not even one bit - it doesnt even phase them - best way to kill them - let the soil dry for like 7 days then water them - then wait another 7 days - now they should be gone, gnats are caused by overwatering

AS I SAIDTHEY ARE LIVING OUT OF THE DRAINAGE WHOLES ON THE BOTTOMS and SIDES OF MY POTS AS WELL. D-EARTH HAS TO BE ABSORBED IN TO BOTTOM OF THE BUGS EXOSCELETON, KINDA HARD WHEN THEY ARE GOING VERTRICALLY UP THE INSIDES OF MY POTS

gnats arnt caused by over watering they are attracted to deacaying biological material IE: ORGANIC SOIL , they will use your soil WET OR DRY.... BELIEVE ME
