hi bleezy,
I just had a gnat problem that i think i'm almost through (i hope). i had good results with predatory nematodes that i bot from the local hydro shop. it took about 3 or so weeks to see the results but the last couple of days i just see an kill about 3-4 rather than 20-30 so i think there helping. You just water them in like nutes and they eat the gnat larva that are eating your roots.
like i say, worked for me.

Ive also heard Diatomacious Earth spread arount the top soil kills them by lacerating there bodies when the land to lay there eggs, and when the llittle fuckers emerge from the ground.
I was going to try this next, but maybe now i don't have to.

Remove the soil....I don't like the soap on soil thing. The surface tension properties of the soap may effect the plants water intake........I use soap on leaf undersides only...........Just remove top soil or flush well and replant..Although you may carry the problem to the new soil........IMO

You can slice a potato and set pieces on the infected soil. After a while, lift the tater and you'll see the larva eating . . . they can't resist. Just toss the used bait (tater) and add another, until you no longer get any signs of them being eaten. Gnats gone.
This is also a great way to see if you've got these nasty maggots.

I've also used Diatomacious Earth (DE) to stem an early outbreak . . . a couple tsps. spread around on the soil surface, where the adult gnats lay their eggs. Be sure to use "food grade" and not the industrial stuff they use in filters. This stuff will absorb some moisture and cause you to water a little more, but it kills any insect it touches.

No need to buy anything special especially grow shop chemicals,,fungus gnats are easily destroyed in soil grows but you must take away their breeding ground first,in order to wipe them out start scarifying the top 1 to 2 inches of the soil every day, this will bring any larve up to the top & they will bake in the sun & die instantly, scarifying the soil daily ensures that no larve will be missed long term,it works with great sucess,100% sucess in my case.

Next go to home depot & buy a 6 pack of sticky tape fly traps, the kind that comes in a roll, place them all around the room, between scarifying the soil daily & the sticky traps they'll be deadd as hell in a week to 10 days & you'll never see them again.

My 1st grow i was totally infested with those bastards,an old grower i know gave me that advice,i used his method & since that grow have never had another problem with gnats but the soil needs to constantly be scarified in order for it to prevent gnats from ever getting a foot hold in your grop op to start with.

Try it & i garauntee you'll get rid of those bastards easy as pie.

Good post. I hate like hell the chemical cure for things.....I used a ground up sea shell product once that would scratch and drain the moisture from the bugs, and you could eat it...completely safe....worked great...but I can't find it now :(

hey twisty,
that ground seashell stuff, i think, is the diatomacious earth i mentioned earlier. yeah, totally safe, 100% organic, edible, and you can even deworm your pets with it.

You're describing DE . . . diatomacious earth, which is diatom (pre-historic crustation) shell that does exactly what you've written. I'm not sure of these spellings and spell-check doesn't know these words . . . at least mine doesn't.

i had gnats in my dirt.....lots of babies....I used soap water, didnt really help.
I put duct tape around to catch them....helped alot along with little cups of listerine around my veg box... when i went to transplant there were a shit load in the bag of dirt....i boiled a lot of water and boiled those fuckers in the bag.....had a few flying around but eventually died off....
