fungas gnates

I took some white posterboard, cut a circle that would overhang the container 1-2", cut a slot to the center (so it would slip past the stalk of the plant). I made two of those to overlap the slots. That reduced my gnats.

I've heard some people put panty hose on the hose on the bottom of their containers to keep the gnats out of the drain holes. EcoSmart makes a "organic insect killer" made of rosemary, thyme, peppermint and clove oil. I spritz that around the base of the container after each feeding. That repels them. It's an irritant to them. (Also to the plant. I wouldn't spray leaves, nor a seedling container.).
 
thanks. i got eco neem, washed the coco with it, they came back. might try covering the tops of the pots. thank you
 
Eco-neem doesn't kill them right off the bat. Its a repellent, they stop eating and eventually starve.

I had a really bad gnat problem once, and the sand/crushed rock and neem sorted them out after a couple of days.
 
go gnats ftmfw!!!!!!
do the 2nd treatment at next watering. 2-3 treatments and all are killed off.

bti mosquito dunks/granulars work great too
 
Try yellow strips hanging and pieces cut up and places onto the medium takes about a month
If that fails try pantyhose tied around the whole pot and around the stem to trap them in
if that fails try this residual insecticide it will work by killing all gnat larvae in the rootmass.

I've read that if you slice up potatoes and set them on your medium the larvae are attracted to it (makes sense, it's a root), come back the next day and throw it in the trash, I've never tried it. Really, you just have to let the top of the medium dry out more.

Dunks work but take a few days to start working. mix into all soil anywhere near your area. Top dressing, mixing in soil mix and watering in all work but keep at it. DE sprinkled around is helpful for many fo our enemies. Neem spray every couple weeks and good to go. Constant pest warfare here as I live in the woods.
