Fundementals of a Single Window Room? - Exhaust

Hey guys, I'm very hesitant to take the final step and purchasing all my equipment until I'm sure of the design for my growroom. I'm from Europe so I won't have the specific words for construction stuff or what have you (Also it’s pretty cold over here). So here goes nothing...

As you can see it's going to be pretty cramped in there, and the proportions aren't right because I don't have the measurements of the equipment but it gives a good idea of the proportions and my tentative plan.

What I am interested in is the airflow. As you can see I will be using a small passive intake (window) to pull the air from, through the filter, cooltubes and then finally out of the room and into the living room which will be unheated and rather cold (especially now in the winter).

And that's another issue, if it's freezing cold outside and the lights are off I'd think even the slightest exhaust of air would put that room into freeze mode. The possibilities that I see are that either I crack the window open just a little and have the exhaust on the lowest setting to keep the passive intake from turning into a stink gateway...

Or I blast the heat in the room and let the speed controller with attached thermometer do the job of balancing it out through the exhaust; leaving the window open. Any Ideas?

I could have the black box that I put on the window with two holes, HoleA for straight exhaust through the lights without a filter and out the door.

HoleB would have ducting running low into the room to cool it and deliver CO2. I then have another blower at the door with a carbon filter directly before it.

Would I have “thermometer speed controllers” (haha, what’s the word for this?) on both of them or just one? How does the CFM scale down. Could I use just one powerful exhaust? I'd be interested to hear if you think this will be an unnecessarily complicated idea.

Open to whatever but I can't touch the ceiling (won’t be able to repair it) and the walls are drywall, pretty unsafe to hang something heavy on but you know, I don't have any experience with that so I don't know the load it can take or how to distribute it and so forth so I’m going for a support grid made out of PVC pipes (someone suggested a tent, though I don’t see the benefits… maybe there are some, please advise).

Thank you.

ok from what i can tell it looks like your exhaust is hooked up backwards!! You would be better off reversing everything.......Your passiive intake should come from your livingroom and your exhaust should be exhausted OUT your window OUTSIDE......You want to pull in air from your apartment then suck it past your lights throught your fan and OUTSIDE.....This just makes more sense really.....Further more you say its freezing cold outside well this way you wont be sucking in freezing cold air from outside.....better to use the ambient air inside your house.......Not only is this better for temps but its better for smell....the way you have it now your going to exhaust all your hot stinky air inside your living room??.......You want your hot stinky air to be exhausted outside not into your living room.....so just reverse everyting

you might be thinking how do i exhaust out my window without anyone seeing it.....good questen i can help you with that too.....

Wouldn't the air being blown out be more noticeable? If it stinks I don't want it outside. IR can pick it up. If you walk past it you'll hear a lot more noise?

thank you for your reply.

I'f be interested in knowing how you would exhaust without anyone noticing, at least with what I know now, exhausting sounds more risky. I'd rather have a safe grow room than a perfect one.

If I were you I'd put a speed controller on the fan, stick the sucking directly from the window and blowing into the cooltubes. Adjust fan speed to suit your acceptable level of stealth. That way you get the max aircooling available without having a passive intake to let cold in and smells out. I assume you're using some AC (although depending on the temp difference between inside and outside, you may not need it) because you're using c02 so this setup should take care of you, more or less.

As for support, 2x4s are cheap and easy to work with, plus they're more environmentally attractive if you give a fuck. Set up four uprights, couple of crosspieces and a middle stringer to hang your lights and you don't have to touch the walls.

i exhaust out my window and i live in an aprtment.....it can be done if done right....the main thing is picking a place that is condusive to what your trying to do.....I picked my apartment specifly becasue it was located and positioned in a place i could easy exhaust air without anyone seeing or hearing it.......I picked a topfloor unit to let the hot stinky air out at its hight point of the building......you cant see or hear my exhaust from outside.......

as far as IR well im not really worried about that i live in ca i have my doctors note and even if i didnt they dont have time or resources to come bust my small closet grow really....Im more worryed about people and mantaince seeing it or noticing it.....so far no ones noticed ive had mataince inside my house 4 different times to fix things twice they wint in my attic to fix leaks.....they have never suspected a thing even while being inside my home......If you do it right it can be perfect AND SAFE....
