My friend in NY has to go to a probation interview after he got caught smoking weed. What should he tell probation?? (He is not on probation this is just an interview, I guess to see if he has a weed problem ) because he still smokes and doesn't want to tell probation he stopped smoking then they test him and he fails... Hes also never been in trouble with anything.

If he's not on probation and never been in trouble he should tell the probation officer to fuck off. Who allows someone to test them to see if they have a weed problem other than some teen kid getting grilled by his parents? (the parents doing the testing)
The way it's suppose to work in the US is that you don't need to bow over to anyone in law enforcement so they can fish for an arrest of some kind.
If what you posted is the actual scenario your friend can just ignore the bastard after telling him he should have arrested him at the time.
The reason they would want a VOLUNTARY TEST is to allow your friend to incriminate himself. Don't volunteer shit, that's how most people end up in trouble.

Sounds like the parents or he would have been busted.
Sounds like a probation sponsored scared straight program.
Pot stays in your body for weeks so getting tested would come up hot anyway.

Someone I guess called the cops on him and he got busted for growing 1 or 2 plants also got arrested for harrasement or something. He told me today that is attorney told him he had to do an interview with the probation office so they can determine if he has to go on probation and then do drug tests sometimes.

See, now it makes sense. You first said he was never in any trouble, now we know he got busted for growing. Big difference.
So he was actually arrested and probation is part of his legal obligation now. In that case he can't really do anything other than submit a UA.

As far as smoking MJ just tell him to be honest and say he smokes , But tell them he only smokes a joint about every 2 or 3 weeks . At this point all they can do is talk.
And honestly thats what they want to do intergate him to see the extent of his 'criminal actividys' to see how close they want to monitor him . No sense lyeing your ass off it will just raise flags , just dont admit to anything else and have backround stories made up - My hobies, the direction I am trying to move my life into, School, work experiance, whatever.
if your honest about smokeing now , the more likely they are about letting you slide on a dirty test later. You just dont want to tell them you smoke reguraly , if you do that their likely to send you to intensive out patent 'rehab'. You/or how ever is most likely/ HIGHLY likely to be sent to out patent anyway since it's a drug charge
My best advice is just to be very frendly and polite . only admit to crimes you have ben charged with / otherwise your no angel but a good polite ,cleancut man
Also if you are truely a criminal (no judgement hear) read up on body langue and how to use it, and how the LEO's use it -Its a masivly usefull skill in all aspects of life anyway
