Fox Farm Ocean Forrest is giving my plants nute burn

My older grow is at day 49 and my babies are day 28. I started in a jiffy pellet then moved them to 16oz solo cup. The older ones are currently in a 1 gallon smart pot. I've been giving them just plain old tap water. I did 2 light feedings on the older ones. Started noticing leaves folding, turning yellow and getting crispy-ish around the edges of the leaves and starting at the bottom of the plant moving upward. Babies are showing same signs. I got a soil testing kit and ran ph, N P and K flurry test. My ph was right where it should be, p and k were at the adequate level but my N was off the color chart. So my question is how do I draw some of the N20200210_102205.jpg20200128_181945.jpg out or "dilute" the ffof? I definitely have stunted growth as well. I'm wondering if I can save these or if there is another ph balanced soil that is less "hot"?

FFOF can be quite hot. I've had issues with it myself in the past. It's high in nitrogen and they even say on their website that no nitrogen fertilizer is needed at first. Also different batches can be hotter than others due to ingredients like aged forest products having different nutrient levels. If they're like many soil companies they also make it regionally so what you get in one part of the country may be different than other parts as they likely source ingredients like forest products regionally. I know people that mix it 50/50 with Happy Frog and I've started doing that myself when using it.

Unfortunately it looks like at least one of those plants has started flowering which is the worst time to have issues with your plants. My only advice would be not to feed anything and just give them plain water. Others might say to flush them with a bunch of water but you might just release more nitrogen faster and then you'd have very unhappy plants with roots in soggy soil deprived of oxygen making things even worse. I'd just ride it out myself.

Good luck

Thank you for your reply! Do you know why one would be going into flowering early? I currently have them on a 20/4 light schedule. Could it be the stress of the burn?

FFOF on water only .... Ph at 6.5 - 6.7 ( FFOF is prebuffered at 6.3 ) .... some strains find it a bit hot but still will acclimate as long as you don’t add more Nutes on top. Nitro will still be used thru stretch and preflower for “ stretch “ and final setup. That minor burn is tolerable as you noticed the stems and stalk are green and healthy. FFOF use is commonly overthought when used.

FFOF makes a good bottom “ super “ soil base in containers with a milder mix on top ( Kellogg’s , dr. earth , Black Magic , Happy Frog , EB Stone or similar “ veg garden “ mixes ..... regional batches do differ from time to time . But this soil does all my initial feeding on ph water only for 6 weeks before a top dress. Nitrogen is still needed for proper photosynthesis during grow. After week 2 of actual flower , plant will move to more PK use. FFOF can be steeped in cheesecloth bags for soil teas too.

The only MOD to FFOF I do is add much more perlite , scoop of myco or 2 into main bag , and EWC ..... nothing else.
For flower ... I add kelp to water instead of synth boosters.

No bullshit flushing at end. Just regular water as usual.

What is your opinion regarding admixing a dose of dolomite?

Its not unusual for plants to show sex without being in flower.

Just curious. What is your humidity level? If it's low, your plant will take up more moisture from the soil and transporate more. With water comes nutrients which can lead to a burn if you were on the line.....

My opinion would be unknown as FFOF uses oyster shell to buffer and dolomite lime is higher in magnesium. Its just finding the right ratio . Although magnesium is obviously used by plant , not sure how much to add to avoid excess issues. I believe Down to Earth makes Oyster shell additive for soil.

Thanks, I’m not sure at all, (stoned) something

I use ffof mixed with ffhf add ewc, dolimite, perlite, kitty litter, compost, blood meal, bone meal, epsom salt, my cod .... cook it for at least a month. Water only except I watch for any deficiencies to show usually I feed 3-4 times through out the grow . R.O. water with cal/mag.

Not sure where this guys sees pollen sacks or pistols at but I don’t see any signs of flower in the picture
You're right there are no pollen sacks. I've been checking daily. However it does look like my Green Crack is starting to flower or maybe just pre flower?? This is only my second grow so I'm still learning.

Right now my humidity is 39% but that is with the extraction fan on which I do not keep running constantly. When extraction is off humidity is about 60-63%. My temps run kinda high I think. Usually around 78-84. I need to get a better circulatory fan in there.

they’re definitely flowering. What lightquantity and schedule do you have them on. I would start new stuff before trying to fix these if you have it. Basically if you stick these under 24/0 light and flush the soil to get rid of salt buildup you may have plants that are readyto flower in a month....possibly more. They’ll recover as other than n tox they’re healthy plants.

Are you sure they weren't auto flowering seeds? It looks it if you are under 20/4 all along.

I blend FF Happy Frog and Ocean Harvest.....probably about 60% Happy Frog, 40% Ocean Harvest....adding 2 cups of perlite and 1 cup of extra worm castings to each 5 gallon smart pot.

fwiw, I have one extraction fan connected to a humidity controller. The only time that fan comes on is when the humidity goes over a set limit. The ambient outside my tent is about 30% at this time of year, so it works very effectively to lower the tent humidity when needed.

The room temp is in the 50's, so I keep the tent temp up with a small space heater on another controller.

Between the two of them I can keep a fairly stable temp/humidity range in the tent. And I have multiple fans in there moving air about.

I really don't think ffof by itself is burning your plants. Something else is at play.
