Found this box on the side of the road this morning, Good for starting seed & clones?

Okay so I was driving down a street near my house the other day when I saw this huge box looking thing, pulled over & the guy was on his porch I asked him if he was throwing it out & he says yeah he was hoping someone or the garbage person would come & pick it up. So I took it back home & stuff & realized that this is a perfect box to start seeds & keep clones in, it is completely hollowed out on the inside from top to bottom but I am gonna get a board and possible divide it in two and make two sections for holding seeds & clones. Let me know if this is a good find guys, I know I am gonna have to make an intake & exhaust some how & fix it all up. I got a separate room for veg & flower so this seems to be awesome for this purpose, and if I want looks like I can fit a few plants to a big mother perhaps.

heck yeah it's a good find! free is always good. it's nice too that it's already something. that gives it some extra stealth quality, especially if you seal up all of your light leaks. i personally wouldn't like it as i like using shop lights and already have 3 of them, though i usually only use two of them at a time max. as tall as that bad boy is, you could even make it a true dual chamber with 18 & 12 hour levels for early flowering and sexing before you move plants into your main room. it never hurts to have extra rooms. i'd use that cabinet for a mother room with a 150w or something if i had it.

post pics of your build when you get it up and running. i'd imagine you'll be putting PC box fans on the back of the unit on top. just remember to build light shields, unless stealth isn't totally necessary.

I dont see why someone would throw that away. Id sand that down and mix a little wood stain with a little hydro dipping, cut a wood basball bat down the middle and put a half on each side with some more hydro dip...fuck that would be some kids dream dresser for like 50 bucks and some elbow grease......unless they hate baseball, lol.

But seriously, that is an awesome find for what you are using it for, let alone how much you paid, or didn't pay for it! Especially for a clone/mother station because light gaps aren't usually an issue. Maybe get a shelf in there towards the bottom so you can have your clones going there with a couple little 2x2 t5s and a dome, and then optimize the rest of the space for a mother and that 150 watt light and it keeps the hottest light up top, and you can vent out the top as well, intake in the bottom to keep the heat rising the hell out of there, might not even need a vented hood.

Just make sure the shelf is sturdy because you are going to want to not only hang lights from it, but also your mother(s) will sit on top of it as well. Dont let the shelf be flush all around and then you wont half to worry about airflow going out the exhaust, just have to cut an intake out the bottow. I'd us a 4" inline to vent it, maybe get a controllable 4" and then a fan speed dial thing and then you can control the temps in the cab by simply increasing or decreasing airflow. With hid lighting you can leave cabs like this in the garage where its cold and they will easily stay at or above 75 and still require some exhausting after heat builds up. Titan Controls, Sentinel, etc, lots of people that make nice gadgets like environmental controllers and whatnot, makes it easy. Maybe a little clip fan in the corner to keep things moving. Little cabs are fun, easy to over do it but I've always enjoyed them. Big rooms are just work.

hey. awesome find, should have bought that bloke a beer!! I have an identical cabinet just half the length 1.5ftWx1.5Dx5.5H, so only one door wide compared to yours. can u think of a good way to make a setup thats half the size? small but still functioning.

id have supply at the bottom, exhaust at top with passive air movement through three compartments for seedling, veg and flower.

Do u think a 70cfm pc fan would draw enough air through the compartments (only have 300w of cfls)? would it make a difference having seedling up the top near the exhaust so they receive the slightly warmer moist air? or down bottom to receive the freshest air

sorry for highjacking your post. just wanted to say well done but kept thinking of questions as i typed lol. and cause im smoking theres no way im wasting the effort of typing all that lol

hope u can help. and goodluck mate!!

What do you think the best way is to set it up? where should I put the intake & exhaust? on top seems good so the air flow will rise up and have a passive intake on the sides peraps. hmm, not sure anyone that knows there stuff let me know what would be best for this box

yea man id put exhaust at top corner. might need to reinforce the hole (depending on thickness of cabinet wood) to minimise vibration noise. think about either a bought or home made carbon filter (im experimenting with homemade at the moment. but think about it cause ive already spent over half of what a proper one is, and cant find a reliable source for carbon. pet stores yes. but here in oz its like 10bucks for only 300g, and retail one is 80bucks but guaranteed to work)

not too sure about airflow needs, depends on heat produced and the lay out of different sections inside cab. but first work out the cabinets internal space ie. length x depth x height, and check the net for free airflow/fan size calculators. ive read elsewhere that for passive inlet make the holes twice the size of your exhaust hole. if u will have complicated sections in cab then think about inlet fans to help things along. oh and make the inlet at the bottom, diagonally across from the exhaust (most efficient circulation)

for your cabinet i would make a veg, flower and clone compartments. space for the electrical/storage, and maybe a separate compartment dedicated to air filtration. thats just me tho lol. i wish i had your cab cause even tho i only want a small cab(minimum space at home) which is what my cabinet provides, im really struggling for space to fit everything inside so its as stealth as possible, and cause its only440mmD x 440mmW, it doesnt allow for good space for the light to get to buds (cfls dont penetrate apparently).

i think you'd be better off with your clones down below as that's where you'll have fewer lights, right? any heat transmitted through the shelf itself would help warm your starters' roots as much as your seedlings. heat rises. you'll have to figure out a way to shield the two sections if you're going to use the starter chamber to flip to flowering. in theory, 70cfm should be more than enough to cool that cabinet. think 70cfm as 70 boxes of LP records. that's a lot of space! you might have a couple dozen cubic feet in the cabinet, if that, and you'll replacing more than that every minute. 300w of flouro should also put out a lot less heat than an HID light. just measure your temps. if you see you're getting over 80 degrees internally, just add another fan after the fact.

I dont see why someone would throw that away. Id sand that down and mix a little wood stain with a little hydro dipping, cut a wood basball bat down the middle and put a half on each side with some more hydro dip...fuck that would be some kids dream dresser for like 50 bucks and some elbow grease......unless they hate baseball, lol.
you'd be surprised JUST how clueless people can be when it comes to DIY stuff. never browsed ebay? i saw someone take a busted old boombox, that probably already had an aux input, make an ipod holder for it where the busted cassette deck used to be and it sold for almost $400 if memory serves me right when it should only have been worth $200 on an optimistic day. if that weren't enough, take a look at http://store.theboomcase.com/ !!! dude is taking old suitcases, hacking them with the cheapest crappy speakers he can find and charging insane amounts for the JUNK! i can't believe the prices he's getting now. i thought it was crazy when he was selling the stuff at $400, but $1000?! anyone with some basic tooling skills could make something even tricker out of fiberglass like custom car system builders do building a reusable mold, for something that not only looks better, but performs better with actual QUALITY speakers and not cheap japanese speaker rejects and STILL charge less. some people would rather buy than DIY. people have been known to throw out plenty of valuable stuff. i remember always checking and cardboard boxes i saw on garbage day walking home from school for the prized playboy/penthouse score. LOL
