Forcing a clone male?

Alright,

Got a question. Let's say I had a mother plant going that was female and at some point or a another I wanted a male plant for cross-breeding purposes, would I be able to force one of the female clones into a male that is suitable for pollenation by stressing it?

That wouldn't be a good idea if you did manage to achieve it, because that excessive stress will have already degraded the genetics of the plant. The seeds would be from a strong mother, and a mutated father, and already far from 'prime'.

i think, id say if it pollenates as a hermie then yeah! just flip the lights on and off all the time drive the fucker crazy! make sure its on a peice of waxpaper or sumthin to catch the pollen then put the pollen in a film container and fridge it.....i would think....never breeded myself tho, so dont take my werd fer it. i kno that fukin with the lights WILL induce hermieism tho;-)

Treat them like crap! I got some clones from a friend and they were haggard looking (they must not have even been under a light). Needless to say they took 4 weeks to come back and they all tuned male on me. I was thinking about vegging much longer too, which would have sucked ass.

Both. And, there's now way to purposely turn it male, it's more of a gamble. You can stress the hell out of it and end of with a female, a hermie, or a full male(I think).

And, the genetics of a plant are degraded every single time you stress it. That's why you can't clone a plant forever. Even under the most perfect growing environment, there are tiny stresses that slowly degrade the strain. I've heard of growers getting 10-15 years out of one strain, under optimum conditions. If you screw it up bad enough, the strain is ruined from that monent on, and will never yield well again, and only get worse each time you clone it(because the act of cloning, is a stress in itself).

I thought that all of that "clones will keep getting weaker and weaker off of the same mother plant" thing was BS? Are you saying that it just degrades very slowly? I could believe that because most people won't keep a mother for 10-15 years so it would be hard to really tell the difference.

Sorry if this post doesn't really make sense, I'm really struggling to put my words together here I just ripped a huge bowl, lol. :eyesmoke:

LOL, No problem. And yeah, it's definitely 100% true that they will degrade, but it takes a long time unless you run into quite a bit of trouble.

Well, actually, i was talking about people who start new mothers periodically from clones of itself, and never re-start from fresh seeds. If they just keep cloning the same genetic line over and over, it will slowly degrade.

Ah, ok. I see what you're saying.

What about growing from seed and stressing it to make sure it's a male. Will that degrade it aswell?

ANY stress degrades it. Whether it's because you cloned it, forced it male, whatever, it's still stress and that still degrades it. If it's a seedling, it's never been cloned, so if you force it male from there, it should end up still stressed, like it would be from cloning, maybe a little more stressed because of the change.

That's what I figured. I'm not planning on trying cross-breeding any time soon or anything, lol. I'll just give it a shot sometime down the road when I end up with a male.

Thanks for the help guys.
