??? for all you HPS users

So last night I stopped into my local habitat for humanity restore to take a look thru all thier junk. I happened across a HPS flood light and bought it for $20. Now I have questions about it.

The part# is CFB40SW276U0456. This is all I have found online about it so far:
CFB=Flood Light
40=400W
S=HPS
W=CWA Ballast
2=120v
76=7x6 Distribution
U=U.L./CSA Listed
0456=Accessories

Can anybody shed any more "light" on this? Is it a good/right light? Should I use it in the enclosure that it is in? Can you use a MH bulb with this type of ballast?

40hps.jpgThis is NOT the exact light I bought, but it is pretty much the same thing.

i used exactly the same type when i did my first grow on a shoestring budget but it was only a 70w hps floodlight and it grew and flowered my ladies just fine m8. i used cfl's also because of my low wattage but the 400w will be fine on its own. for 20 bucks dude, a bargain! :clap:

sure you can use it, any HPS can be used, its a 400W you say, nice, should cover 3x3 ft. tho Im not sure about the reflector/hood I would maybe consider to make a DIY one, atleast at some point, about the MH, I don't believe so, with out knowing ..

but nice for 20$ can easily flower/grow 4 small plants, good buy :D

p.s.

bulbs have a lift time depending on quality on roughly a year of running and will loose intensity over time, so at some point you might want to look to replace it if it is`t brand new ?

Nice parking lot light for $20....
Take the glass cover off and just set it aside...
Sounde like it is wired for 220 vac...
It most likely has a multi tap ballast, if you want to convert it to 110vac ...

that was def 1 of my concerns. has a nice reflector in it, but wasnt sure if the box it was in would take away from the light output. also wasnt sure about heat issues with it in the box.
the unit is brand new, wires have never had a wire nut on them, no bulb though. any thoughts on a good brand/type of bulb?

+reps for the chart

not an electrician but the specs i found on it says 120V. only has 3 wires coming out of it. does any of that make sense???

That chart should say "lumens received at varying distances". Still something seems off with that chart. I think someone got some math wrong. My 600w HPS's put out 95,000 lumens. Now If i where Illuminating a 3x3' area that would be 95,000/9sqft = 10,555.5 lum per sqft. There are exactly 12.6 lumens in one candle power. that chat is quite off... No disrespect to Slipon.

I found this used but reconditioned german quality poot light for about 80 bucks online

DSC00410.jpgDSC00411.jpgDSC00412.jpg

its a 600W and came with brand new wiring/safety box and a brand new 600W sunT PIA philips bulb in it and a year warrenty, have served me well, have made 3 complete grows with it (tho used a 6 bulb T5HO fixture for Veg)

had it about 20" away from my plants on my fist run and did great getting like 6 Oz from two plants, tho with a 8 weeks Veg time in 7 gallon pots

DSC00819.jpg

had to run a 6 inch ventilation in there to control heat and also a carbon filter on it once they began to flower/stink

seccon grow I did run in to summer and high outside/ambi temps and had to build a DIY hood for it

DSC01088.jpgDSC01089.jpgDSC01090.jpgDSC01091.jpg

I know not a beauty, made it in 3 lunch breaks, but did the job, made my temps drop from +30C to 24-26C

DSC01127.jpgDSC01251.jpg

gave me 8 Oz from 4 plants with a 5 weeks Veg time

glass do block some light out, like 10-20% according to my light meter

DSC00850.jpg

but since I can keep it much closer with the glass/ventilation on it (12-15 inch`s) I get atleast 20% more light out of it or my plant tops dose as artificial light do loose a lot over a short distance

400W is a good starting point... you could probably even get a 400W MH conversion bulb so you could have both preferred lights. (MH = veg HPS = flower)

be careful when wiring it up... I would even go as far to say...dont wire it straight into existing electrical.
if it were me..I would attach it to a decently thick gauge chord with plug and plug it into a receptacle.
you can look up simple instructions for attaching basic 3 wire chords... but again..use extreme caution.
mistakes can put you at risk for a fire.

and this light has a cool upside... it's "UL listed for wet location' ... so should the worst happen and water come rushing through your walls or ceiling... the light will be just fine!!

was checking it out some more at lunch. there is a sticker inside saying that it is a multi tap ballast, factory wired 120V. whats up with a multi tap ballast??? does that just mean i run either 120 or 240?? can i run 2 bulbs off of 1 ballast like a fluro??

The problem with flood lights is usually the heat they produce.
why is this? isn't all HPS bulbs the same no matter what fixture they are in?? where is most of the heat produced, the bulb or the ballast?? would help if i mounted the ballast on the other side of the room??

i was wondering what the U.L./CSA Listed meant. and yes there is a sticker inside of it saying suitable for wet locations. as for wiring, i am no dummy when it comes to wiring, i jus ain't book smart when it comes to electricity. looking inside this box, i have no idea what i am looking at!!lol

you should be able to do the 3 wire with no problem...I'll try and find a simple diagram to post up for you
i do not have any problems wiring anything. i have wired houses, garages, cars, trucks, lamps, etc. i wired up my current lighting setup. 1 ext. cord into a junction box, split into 4 wires to 4 sockets. thats not my question or concern.

i am not book smart in electricity or electronics. there are other questions i have about this fixture and ballast. was hoping for some answers here.
