so i was wondering if i could take a 4ft fluorescent shop light apart and pull the ballasts and all the guts out and get some more fluorescent bulb holders and take 4 2ft bulbs and run them off the 4ft ballasts or would it not have enough wattage for all the light bulbs

Thats a terrible idea, you do know that electricity can kill right? are you a qualified electrician who knows what he is doing? Fires get started that way, and then the grow gets found by the firemen, thats when you lose all yer stuff and insurance won't cover it due to its illegal nature. so there you sit in the hokey playing tea bag champion with your new cellmate Ben Dover and when you get out you will have nothing.

I say go to the store and buy some 2 foot lights, then you can sleep at night knowing it won't catch fire or kill someone.

Why don't you pull the guts out and replace the ballast with one that does ( 4 ) 2 foot bulbs. You can mount the new bulb holders on the old fixture and you'd be doing it the safe way.

Why are you going to use 4 - 2 foot bulbs on the same fixture ? you'd have to mount them the same way so you would end up with the same thing.

Then just get a ballast that does what you want. I've done that plenty of times, take the flourescent end caps(lamp holders, whatever you want to call them) and screw them to where ever you need them, I have cab made out of wood so screwing them where I need them isn't a problem, then just get the right ballast and you are good to go.

The ballast has a wiring diagram on it so you should be OK, if not you can ask here and get any confusion taken care of.

flouresent ballasts are made for a certian number of tubes. You can part out a shop light but the ballast is only good for the number of lamps stated. There is usually a wiring diagram on the ballast and a chart for the tube types it operates.

my thoughts exactly. there is a good chance your ballast will operate 2 smaller lamps but if its not marked on the ballast, dont do it.

Why not ask the master electrician grandpa instead of a bunch of strangers with no credentials?

Probably won't work. Now you have to start 4 tubes instead of 2. Not everything is linear.
