I align with him on pretty much every issue, two concerns though: Afghanistan and the economy.
First, I agree with his foreign policy of being largely isolationist. Focus on the defense of our country, not defense of our assets. We've been imperialists since this nation was founded, and that needs to change. BUT I'm not a proponent of immediate and complete withdrawal from Afghanistan. I've been there, and I don't think the nationals are prepared to maintain the security that's currently in place. There are still tons of drugs, money, and weapons flowing from Pakistan to Afghanistan and vice versa. I'm sure other bordering nations too, it just so happens that I was next to the Pakistan border so that's specifically what I was seeing. That can't continue happening, and I'm kind of torn because its largely NOT our business but to let it continue at the level its at, or at the increased level that would likely happen if/when we left, isn't good for anyone. I dont agree with most of the reasons that got us there, dating back to WWII, but to leave it as is would be to abandon a people that do largely support and respect our presence. I also don't think we should stay there just to stay there, and a complete military occupation may not be what they need. More MiTTs and BTTs like we have in Iraq, special teams designed to train and transition power to nationals.
And whats your take on the FairTax? Im no economist but I feel like abolishing an income tax and increasing sales tax is going to cause consumers to try to spend less money. Not great for stimulating an economy. At the same time, income taxes are a relatively new concept, and governments and economies did just fine for centuries without them.
