Flourescent lights enough?

easy there. i have just potted three ice seeds and they are doing pretty good for 4 days growth. they are about 3" already and leaves are getting bigger slowly and theres not too much growth in height yet.
My main concern is about the lights that i am using. There is one cool white 21W fluro, and one warm white 21W fluro. Are these two lights combined enough for me to grow through all three stages or should i get another one of the two lights, and if so, which one?

also how long does it take to get past that slow period of growth just after theyve sprouted and are showing four leaves in total per plant, and with fluros, will it take longer

Hiya there ManInTheShed, RE lights, your fluro setup will be OKish for the early stage of your growing exercise. I use fluros only for the clone raising part of the process, (abt 12 per cycle) this amounts to abt 2 weeks until roots show through the side of the pot. (pots are abt 2" sqr filled with rockwool) The cloning process takes place in a modified NFT (nutrient film tech) system. (And is also why I will not address your query re how long will it take . . ) After roots show the plants are repotted into plastic bags with a good quality potting mix and placed in the veg stage enclosure. Although this area could be run with fluros it has in fact 1 x 400 Watt MH burner. (a blue end of the spectrum lamp) When the plants are big enough and clone stock has been taken from them they are then placed in the fruiting area. This area has 2 x 400 Watt HPS burners on a lineal mover.
So . . the point to all this is . . Fluros produce mainly blue end of spectrum light and not all that much of it compared to a MH lamp. The MH lamp produces blue end of spectrum light which is fine for veg growing. (Think of the blue ish light you see through summer) HPS produces red end of spectrum light and should be used to produce fruit. (The object of the exercise) (Think of the orange tint to sunlight in autum. In some parts of the world it is known as The Harvest Sun)
The object of the exercise, as far as lighting is concerned, is to replicate the sun. This means not only spectrum and time but also the amount of energy that that falls on a given area. In terms of heat energy this works out at about 1 kW per sq mtr.
It really boils down to how much energy the plants have available (all other considerations being optimal) as to how well they will produce.
Hope this sheds some light (double pun :) on the subject . . .
Regards . . . anon

maybe fluros dont produce as much blue light as a MH light, but i only have 2 plants, they seem to be doing alright in the sense that each day, they have grown a bit taller and got bigger leaves. I know that if iwas doing the whole process with about 10-20 plants, then obviously i would have to get an hps or MH light, but seeing as the growroom has been set up reasonably well with time and effort and basic knowledge...all behind a sofa in my shed. there is little space for light to get out and two fluros, warm and cool white both of 21 watts, and it is ventilated with cold air and warm air being pumped in with fans. is there enough light to make em grow to about 3-4 foot, and maybe even bud?
I am trying to get a HPS light, but at the moment there is no money comming in, so until then i just got to hope that all is fine and they will grow hopefully well into the veg stage. Somebody please give me some insight to my ganja plants!! thankyou. P.S.
Do you think i should go and buy another fluro light coz i think it would be lighter in there, and if i do which colour and wattage should i get???? thanks.

Floros will work for cloning and vegging but you need HID's for flowering. You will be very disappointed with the results from flowering with floros.

how well developed and tall do you think i could be able to make them grow into the veg stage. I am going to buy a hps light from ebay, but unitl that day, shall i get some more floros just to add to the light?
And also, can i combine lights to increase a certain spectrum of the growing field, like having about three floros and two or three cfl's?

Hey ManInTheShed. This is my first grow and I'm doing the whole thing with fluorescent lights. I would use cool whites for veg. maybe throw a couple warm whites as these promote thicker branching and 5% denser buds during flowering time. I'm 3 weeks into flowering with 4 warm white 4' T12 fluorescent lights andseeing great results. Hey, if its your first grow, it dosn't take much to be impressed in my opinion. No I'm not saying you will see better results then if you used an HPS, but fuck it! Good luck bro!
