First off Id just like to say that a FL thread is an awesome idea!
I started a single girl, in a 4 gallon pot outdoors, in mid/late april. for a while it seemed i could conceal here well enough. but now that shes grown to about a foot tall ive, unfortunately decided that the only safe way to continue her life cycle is indoors. I cannot risk discovery by a wandering neghibor or random lawn technician. I have no working setup indoors, as far as light, so on. My idea here is to put her in front of a pair of windows, moving her slightly as the sun progresses through the sky....
Most everything ive ever read or heard has lead me to believe that this is a fairly bad idea. People openly disregard sill growing as a terrible idea.
However, I have heard of a few examples and even seen a few pictures of people growing on "sills" or rather just behind windows in places like south england...
Here in north florida, I have an east/southeast facing window and a south/southwest facing window. I would assume that we recieve... about as much light here in the sunshine state as they do in dreary old england (no offense to anyone, im just saying, its rainy there)...
Furthermore, while living outside, its not as if she recieved total and direct for an entire day period. trees, clouds, and shade from other objects creates a less than perfect photoperiod, a hurdle i suppose all, if not most outdoorsmen are faced with when cultivating the herb. Yet ive seen some amazing outdoor...
Inside, it seems she recieves a more regular amount of light, although the light seems weaker, (i suppose because of the lack of heat?) the only factor keeping sulight from her is the angle of the sun to the window as to where shes placed in the room... and well, clouds...
Most importantly shes out of sight!
I figure what im doing is pretty much the same as growing directly outdoors since it isnt as if i had overhead sun *all* the time out there anyway, and seem to be getting enough light to keep my 12 incher from drooping , so far...
So does anyone really think theres a big difference in the amount of energy a plant can draw from direct sun as opposed to direct and indirect light coming through a window? Personally, I cant really see how the window glass could reduce luminosity at all. Does anyone have any experience with this (window growing, moving from outdoor to a window) at all or am I a lone fool sailing without a proper chart?
While Im rambling on the subject, Im also concerned about light pollution now that shes inside. since its in my living quarters, she'll be exposed to the 26 watt cfl I use to light my quarters at night. I have a closet which remains extremely dark, and my thought is to put her in there to simulate night untill I go to sleep, at which time ill place her before the window to catch the rising sun that next morning, and turn off my lights for totall darkness. The only flaw with this design is that my closet is not the best ventilated room. its probably 3x3, and the most recent gRobox attemt i made in there resulted in a roasted plant and moldy soil.....
So Im worried that for the few hours I stowe her in the closet each night, she may be exposed to some kind of leftover fungus spores, although i long ago cleaned out the moldy soil (though not the now defunct box, which contained the plant with moldy soil in its pot..) I am still paranoid about mold. I will be placing her high above where the box was situated and placing a fan in there to increase airflow.... does anyone think what im planning to do could result in mold?
Other ideas Ive had are simply placing a black trash bag over the plant and leaving it where it is to protect it from the room light for a few hours. But I still have concerns about mold, and wonder how much light this actually will keep out as oppose to the closet idea...
Realize I just threw alot out there, understand if this thread gets reposted or recategorized or whatever... If anyone has ANY useful input, especially fellow floridians, PLEASE let me know!!!!
