Ya that's a good method. Kinda like LokiGros RDWC system he has with that same approach.

It's definitely now my go to method for flood and drain. So many years I was washing all them pellets, so much time wasted lol. Now it only takes a couple cups of them to pot that whole tray. Just enough to surround the rapid rooter and fill the pots. I like to cut little 4 inch circles of panda and slit it and use it to cover the pellets too. I don't want any light getting through. I make sure to make a little 3/4" hole in the middle so the base of the stem can breathe, don't want a damp off condition.

Nice. 3/4" would be about perfect. Even if it ended up being a thicker stem than that, it wouldn't be a problem.

In a flood and drain SoG the plants aren't gonna end up with more than say 1/2" stems IME. For trees with big ass trunks I cut the hole larger, but then I am covering a 10 gallon pot so the whole circle is larger. Easy enough to make the hole bigger if the plant needs it. I found that covering the pots on my bigger plants limits evaporation and there is nothing wrong with that lol, especially with coco. I noticed that covering the base of the trunk, even on large plants, can cause issues so I wouldn't do that.
That's awesome thats exactly how I just setup my new table. ANND I was going to dimple die mine too haha. You're obviously a fabricator or into race cars of some description!
Have you tried it without any media on the bottom of the trays ?

Yep, the mat is an addition that I find worthwhile.
I do like to work on fast cars, here is one of my project vettes. 357 CID all forged, full roller, supercharged, fuel injected, trickflow heads, aluminum flywheel, kevlar clutch, tremec 6x, suspension upgrades, all poly rubbers, it's had the works. Started as a salvage title build, kept it street legal but can't take it to the track unless I put in a roll cage, harnesses and whatnot (I don't wanna ruin it's street fun factor). Been enjoying the hell outta my 'vettes with the nice weather and everyone off the streets due to COVID-19.
I'm only about to start my journey on medialess flood and drain. Would you highly recommend the cocomat in the bottom? I was going to flood it without media every hour to keep humidity up and root zone temps down. Also keep the res aerated so I don't run airstone in the res to stop the ph swings I was getting previously.
