first time topping

I topped one of my plants for my first time some clear stuff came out then it turned brown at the cut is this normal.

yup, as long as the main stem doesn't start to turn brown more than say 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the cut.

Its just the very tip what does it mean if more turns brown. How long does it take for new growth to come from the top.

the new growth does not come for where you are thinking the new top willl be the two branches below where you topped the brown spot is now dead plant matter

if it keeps getting browner and browner further down the stem it can kill the plant, but its unlikely and pretty rare if you used clean/not rusted blades. the growth will not come from the top, your branches will grow faster and bushier now.
