First time growing...considering this set up...

I don't have a lot of space or money at the moment so what I'm thinking of trying would be something like this...

Going to try 1 female plant..

Growing cabinet:.
2' deep x 4' wide x 4' tall cabinet
Fluorescent grow lights (Thinking two of them...I think they are 17watt 60watt equivalent)
A cheap thermometer/humidity gauge
Small fan with a vent...might consider a small air purifier instead to maybe help with smell(?)
Cheap timer...

How does that sound? It isn't amazing but I think that basic set up would work...probably not the best yield but I can't have insane electrical usage.

As for growing materials...

Thinking coconut fiber (just because I am familiar with it)
Occasional coffee grounds after some amount of plant growth
Miracle grow
And just basic watering stuff...I'll need to look into pH equipment but I'd probably just get a tester and use baking soda or...what vinegar? I still need to research that a bit.

I'm also planning on keep that one plant going with cloning...

Does that set up sound alright for a first time trial? I'm ok with trial and error...I just want a little success :-P

what k are the lights?
you will need something reflective i.e flat white paint, mylar, emergency blankets...
you will need an intake for clean air

how many plants you looking to grow?

More than adequate space for one plant, though a couple of short plants would probably give better results and be easier to maintain than one tall one. Those lights are fine for germinating or early seedling, but they are really weak when it comes down to it.

You could invest a bit more in a large 125W CFL for flowering at least, but ideally one for vegging and one for flowering, and have more than enough to grow a couple of decent plants on a budget. They put out equal to 1000W incandescent light, which is a big step up, and running one 125W bulb like I'm referring to would cost just over $8 for 24h x 30 days where I live. That's really affordable no matter how you look at it.

Here are some posts of mine from another thread, check them out for links to the bulbs and more info on that.

  • 5' plug-in cord set
  • 75W of incandescent equivalent output using only 17W of energy
  • Save 78 percent on your utility bills
  • Color: 4200K
  • Lumens: 1093
  • Dimensions: 2.5"W x 2"D x 28"H
Planning on having a vent with a fan blowing in and a purifier blowing out...

i have a box half you size, and i use more lumens, im at 5000 lumens. its suggested to have just about 3000 lumens per cubed foot. go for "DAYLIGHT" light bulbs looking at a 100 watt equivalents, tht will be fine its working for me. tht puts about 1602 lumens each. you need probably 4.

Multiple bulbs at 1602 lumens each will give you.......... a larger area with 1602 lumens! Lumens don't add, more bulbs will only give you more coverage area. One of the 125W CFL bulbs I referred to is 13.5" long and 3.5" wide, puts out equal to 1000W incandescent, and gives off between 7000-8000 lumens depending on which brand and etc.

This one is 6400K for vegging, and runs $28.28 +shipping. All you'd need to get is a medium-mogul socket adapter, or a cord with attached mogul socket, which is what these bulbs use. There are also reflectors with or without bulbs, available for these CFL's.
