First time growbox questions

Before i ask any questions, i just wanna say thank you all for being part of what seems like an absolutely invaluable resource. This website has taught me more than i ever thought could go into growing bud. I realize i still barely know anything, but i figured the only way to really learn is to start growing. So again, thanks for the information you've all provided and the inspiration to stop buying that dirt weed!


So I've decided to build a grow box. My basic plan is 3' tall, 2' wide, and 2' deep. I'll have a DIY carbon filter coming off 2 computer fans that will be set next to each other with a piece of rectangle to circular 6" diameter ducting that will have the filter on top. I'll have a door on the front with 5 plants in soil till i can figure out the males and females.

My questions:
1) Would i be better off buying a mass amount of CFL's for this (my first grow) or buying one HID for the top and a few CFL's to fill in light on the sides/corners?

2) Is 5 plants too many for this small space? The way i figure, when sexing the plants i'll knock out the weakest ones along with any males so that i'll have 2 or maybe 3 plants that i'll actually have flower.

3) I have exactly $140 to spend on this project, would this be enough?

4) I'll be using bagseed to see if i'm even capable of growing. I will eventually buy seeds from nirvanashop but wanted to make sure i could sufficiently test everything and get it all in working order so i don't waste any potential of the seeds i'll buy. So is there any way to tell if a bag seed will be decent bud, whether it'll be sativa/indica, and any other specifics of what looks like a healthy, growable seed?

5) I'll be growing in a closet, so would i need to actually vent to an outside source, or could i just vent back into the closet from the box? It wouldn't be a problem getting fresh air into the box, as i could always run a hose from the closet to another room somewhat stealthily.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have no way of getting bud and to be honest, i'm sick of paying for it. I'd feel much better knowing i'm smoking what i cared for from seed to smoke. Thank you for any help you can provide!

I am a relative newcomer to this hobby as well but since none of the other viewers commented ill just be rather short with it....

140 is a pretty thin budget, what exactly are your plans for the grow box construction, how much $$ are you devoting to that?? with just cfls youll not only keep the cost down but the HEAT that comes with HID lamps, and at 3' tall youll definitely want to read up on scrog/lst and topping/fimming to keep the height down and maximize yields....

and as far as the seeds, i was once told "life is like a bag of bagseed...you never know what youre gonna get" but im a devoted fan of the bagseed surprise and i currently have 5 children about 7 weeks old, all stellar and the seeds were right from a bag

I've been reading up on topping and LST, seems like a good idea i'll have to remember that stuff. I was just going to build a simply box of plywood with a door and some weatherstripping or foam on the inside to stop light leaks. Then fans and ductwork on top, but i won't have to worry about the carbon filter for a while. So really the 140 bucks is just for lighting, 2 cpu fans, and the box itself.
