First Time, 12/12 from seed, SOG, Aeroponics: 3+ strains

Well I thought it would be cool to document this, and I'll inevitably be asking for help so I might as well have a journal.

I built the aeroponics unit from here: https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/156863-grow-2-lbs-2-x-27.html

I have it set up in a 2x4x7 tent (perfect size, woot). All I have at the moment is around 400 watts of T-5 (veg bulbs at the moment). In the end I'll either switch bulbs to flower, or maybe upgrade to the HPS. Depends how much I can afford. :P

There are 32 sites on the unit (4x8) and I'm starting with the following as far as seeds:

11x Big Bud
10x Northern Lights
10x Bubblegum
5x Unknown (from marijuana-seeds.nl)
1x Dank Bag Seed (pretty sure it's OG Kush?)

No telling how many I'll actually end up with.

Right now I'm on I guess day 3 after having put the seeds into rapid rooters. Nothing popping at the moment, but I'll still upload pics soon. The fact that nothing has popped actually kind of worries me, but I'm sure I'm just being paranoid. After all, I have no idea how long they're supposed to take. :eyesmoke:

Hi,

I use rapid rooter cubes. keep them moist and not too cold and they should pop in a week. I break a piece off the bottom and fill the little hole.

Cool,
I have a 2 x 4 cabinet and was thinking of going 12/12 from seed so I will stick around.

Okay so here are from last night (day 3). I started by soaking the seeds for 8-10 hours in RO water, then when 80% of them had sunk I transferred to rapid rooters.

I put the rapid rooters upside down, cut a slice in the "bottom" about 1/4 to 1/2'' deep and put the seeds in there, then closed them up with rubber bands. This way the rapid rooters stand on their own (on what used to be the top), and it's much easier to access the seed if I have to make adjustments (which I already did, one was upside-down).

As of last night there was only that one showing any signs of popping.

At this point I've already got the lights on 12/12, just because it helps keep the heat at the right place. I think it was too cold in the beginning.

Day 4, and there are now 3 beginning to pop. All of them are bubblegum, which was kind of surprising. I guess I didn't know what to expect but for some reason I was expecting the NL to go first. A NL seed was the only one to show a taproot at the time I put them into the rapid rooters, but oh well...

Looks like your off to a great start.

I have found by using a remote temp probe on my hygrometer I put it in an empty rooter plug, water it like the rest and I can measure the temp of the seed.

You want between 75 and 84° over 84° will tweak it and under 75° will slow it down.

And day 5 here. I'm having some issues with heat control and water flow. The manifold isn't really putting out as much as it should, I'm guessing because I'm using a separate reservoir underneath the main thing, so the water has to go up a couple of feet. This is causing me to have to put the manifold really close to the net pots. We'll see how that goes. Might just get a stronger pump. We'll see.

More pictures! Day 6, I think everything's looking pretty good. Not that I know how things are supposed to look, haha. Not as many seeds have popped as I would have liked/expected, but there's still time so I can wait.

Btw, cruzer, I would have loved to take your advice, cuz it sounds awesome, but I don't have a thermometer, nor can I probably afford one at this point. :P I'll probably just get one of those really cheap ones when I get the chance.

[Edit] I did end up getting a thermometer with a little humidity meter. :-)

Damn, these mothers grow fast once they get out of the ground. I'm having some issues with heat... I've got an exhaust with a fan coming out near the top, but it doesn't seem to do too much. Most of the time I've got to keep it open with a fan blowing inside. I think I'll try to get some soft of smaller fan to hang inside, but then I'm not sure what will happen as far as humidity...

Anyways, learning experience. I think they look good so far. I think there are 11 seeds that haven't done anything at all yet so we'll see how that goes...

Pics from last night, this morning and this evening...

Well they're doing pretty fine and dandy, no new pics. I'm kind of disappointed with my germ %, but it's my first time so meh. Hoping not too many turn out to be male. Anyone know how soon they might start to sex on 12/12 from seed?

normally about 16-21 days is when you are fully able to tell whether they are male or females using 12/12. I want to say the males develop sooner with the females show sex in between 18-23 days or so. hope this helps. good luck and good work so far

Perfect, thank you!

I've got an interesting development... I was given two clones by a friend because they weren't doing too well with the space he had to give them. So now I've got these new ladies in the corner. There's some yellow spotting on one. Spider mites possibly? Or it is just malnutrition kind of thing?

If it's spider mites what would I do?

Sorry man, not a good idea. 12/12 from seed is plants all the same size, you just brought in two that are going to throw your lighting off. Plus you brought in plants that have been in a different environment and possibly have spider mites?

Oh well live and learn. The stalk looks fine to me.

Good luck.

Hmm, well I did have some extra room as far as the lighting goes, but now you've got me worried. I figure since everything was 12/12 it would almost be perfect, they might not all flower at the same time, but at least I won't be forcing anything into weird light cycles that they wouldn't already be getting.

I got some neem (sp?) oil for the spider might issue...

Shit, now I'm not sure what to do. If they don't stay here, they pretty much are dead and I feel like it would be such a waste to just throw out two females, especially when I was already under my expected germ #.

Shit, haha.
