first post - question about hydro reservoir

Fellas and Ladies, please don't flame me on this one. i am pretty new to this. so, say one has a deluxe supercloset and has 13 8"-12" plants. the reservoir for the hydro system holds about 17 gallons. one may have noticed some slight nutrient burn on some of the leaves and may feel that this may be due to the plants using a lot of the water and leaving too much nutrients in the depleted water source. the question is, for a 17 gallon reservoir, how much water should one add per day... or every other day?

also, say the plants are misted in the AM and PM and its light cycle is 24/0, could the water on the leaves be causing any burn?

Water droplets can focus the light like a magnifying glass if allowed to form droplets on the leaves. Are you misting plain water or with nutes?

Post pics if able but strip exif data first.

I wouldn't worry about too much water being added back. It may slow growth but less harmful than nutes burn and if the plants are wanting plain water then give it to them.
 
its always better to give it not enough than too much, i grow strictly hydro, no soil, no soiless mix nothing just me and hydroton pellets and a 10G res, what i do is once every 7-10 days cleaen the res out and fill with more nutes, or if you want to conserve nutes, just come in every 3 days or so and top the res back up with normal water after testing ph,ppm etc, the ppm will go down but thats ok, you will be fine if the ppm goes down, just refil and clean the res as soon as you can and repeat the process, i have literally changed my res once a month and still grew crazy buds, but now adays im a little more conservative. and like to play it safe. dont make the mistake of letting tjhe res get too low, as you mentioned the high concentration of nutes is very very bad, iv seen 1100ppm go to 2000+ in less than a week so be carful, a plant can handle too little, but not too much. dont be lazy refil and clean res every 7-10 days

ok wait. foliar feeding will cuase burns, but they appear totally different then over-nuting burns. what kinda of lights are you using? the key is to not foliar feed when the temp is too high, as the water acts as a magnyfying glass and can help the light burn little holes, they look like bleached spots. actual chem burns will usually appear on the serrated edges and leaf tips, not all over the leaf.

how much water to add to the reservoir? enough to keep it under the roots, and over the pump.

take some pics, a lot of necrosis on plants is due to deficiencies, not just over ferting

Let's just say I am running the same set up as you might or might not be. The one option I bought was the 24/7 nutrient meter (ph, ppm, and water temp) and it has been a huge help in maintaining a base line when changing nutes and in between. You can probably find it cheaper online but in the long run it will be a big help, just keep it calibrated. This is my first grow and I am 4 weeks into the flowering stage, so I might be a little bit ahead of you. I ran the 17 gals during the veg and didn't really notice a lot of water uptake because the root mass was not that extensive. I just kept the level touching the bottom of the net cups. I also went 2 weeks between nute changes because of the same reason, the ppm reading on the monitor barely changed. Once I went to the flowering cycle I reduced the gals in the reservoir to 12 because the pump will cycle on and the roots are in the water. This helps to reduce the nute costs a little as I am changing every week. I am also flushing root zone with 10 gals of fresh h20 every 2 weeks just to rinse some salts off the roots. You can see a significant difference in your ppm reading. I started with 10 plants and it got real crowded real quick after flowering started. The plants have tripled in size and I was running out of room. I removed the shelf and dropped the reservoir to the bottom, I will start seeds and clone somewhere else. If you do this you have to add some more reflective material as Supercloset was a little stingy in that area. The plants in the back corners were overgrown and stunted so I removed them. I also noticed very little flower production under the canopy, due to the overcrowding, so I bought a 50W red LED and hung it down the back wall just under the canopy. Now I am getting some serious buds underneath.
