First post and first grow. Going guerilla in East Coast woods.

So I'm completely new to growing and I'm interested in it primarily out of curiosity. I think it be cool to smoke weed that I grew myself. I have no plans of selling it, if anything I would just give it away to my friends. With that said,

I wanna grow in the woods behind my house and secrecy is the most important thing to me. I'm planning on letting NOBODY know about my grow no matter how tempting it may be lol. I am considering growing in my wooded backyard but I'm concerned about the neighbors seeing me walk back there to check on the plants or someone discovering them and calling the cops. There's 200 acres that the town owns behind my property. Should I grow on the towns property, my property, or the wooded part of my neighbors property? It should also be noted that I'm a college kid so during the summers I live at my parent's house. The quality of the bud is the least of my priority's; at least for now. Anyways, do you guys have any advice on:

How many plants?
Bucket or in ground grow?
Where to get seeds? will "street" seeds work or should I get them from a seed bank?
Is my spot good or should I find somewhere more remote?
How much care do the plants require (watering)?
And MOST importantly how do decrease the risk of getting busted?

Hi, Welcome to the fun and exciting adventure of growing.
I will try to address some of your questions...

Q: How many plants?

A: As many as you would like to grow. Keep in mind some may not germinate, and half of those that do, will be males. Also keep in mind that if this is your first grow, you may lose a few to pest, animals, deficiencies, etc. Start with about 3 times more than you wish to yield in the end. (if you want 3 plants to finish, start 9)

Q: Bucket or in ground grow?
A: That is another option that would be totally up to you. Either way would work. I have always amended the ground soil with some of my own. (mixed in) The plants grow bigger in the ground and are harder to spot than a plant growing in a container. However I have heard that container growing is easier to control pests, and they are more portable if needed to be moved.

Q:
Where to get seeds? will "street" seedswork or should I get them from a seed bank?
A: Bagseed can work if it was a good buzz that you enjoyed, first time growers use them so when they make mistakes, they do not kill off expensive seeds. A known strain from a seed bank would be better in regards to knowing the strain, and what type of care that is needed for the plant to grow. Look for a good outdoor strain, as some are more suited for indoor grows.

Q:
Is my spot good or should I find somewhere more remote?
A: I would not recommend growing on your own property. If the township property is not explored by anyone else but you, I would think it would be safe. Keep an eye on your neighbors watching, I dont know how close you are to them, but when you venture into the woods, try to be discrete about it. Don't go trugging off into the woods with a shovel, and bags of soil when they are around to see. Try to learn the area well enough that you can make your way to your grow in darkness, and go when it is night time, if you have to. Or you can go when they are at work, or go to the store.

Q:
How much care do the plants require (watering)?
A: This depends on your environment, and how big the plants are. Young plants do not need as much water as mature plants. Spring is usually wetter then the long days of summer. As your plants grow, the days get hotter and you will need more water. You must keep in mind that water is heavy, and lugging water into your grow area can be quite exhausting. I would advise finding a place near a source of water. (spring, stream, lake, etc)

Q:
And MOST importantly how do decrease the risk of getting busted?
A: Use common sense, and have an excuse ready if you get caught in the area. Hiking, bird watching, bring a book with different types of trees or insects to say you are out to study nature, etc. If you have a suspicion that your grow has been compromised, DO NOT GO BACK, take it as a loss. Of course, the easiest way to avoid being busted is to not do it.

I hope this helps a bit for you, but there are lots of other things you should be aware of. I would recommend doing a lot of reading about this stuff before you attempt it. RIU is a great start, there are plenty of threads on this site that are very helpful. You still have time to prepare, and study.
Patience is the key, you can start some seeds inside now, let them get established a bit. Find a good grow spot, and prepare the area. By late May or early June, you will be ready to put them outside.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey.
:peace:

Thank you! Very helpful. This may seem like a dumb question but how hard is it to spot a few pot plants in the woods? What's the typical height? I know that it varies greatly by strain. And IF the plant was discovered what do the police typically do? Remove the plants or setup a whole investigation?

Thanks,

Detection is based on the person discovering it. Some folks wouldn't even know a pot plant is they walked right by it. Others can spot it from yards away. If an officer discovered one or two plants, I don't think a big investigation would ensue, but if a large grow were to be found, that's a different matter. Chances are if your plants are found by someone who knows what they are, they will be gone. Advice is to keep an eye out for signs of other people in the area like new paths, footprints, etc. If you think your grow has been compromised, Do NOT go back, take it as a loss.
