Well, what I mean, is you'll be comparing your feed water PH to the runoff PH at the bottom to see what's going on inside the pot potentially.

PPM, well, you want to know how strong of a nutrient batch your making so that you don't overdose and toast your shit. Less is seriously better in this dept and a PPM is a simple, higher is more, lower is less number so.. you can gradually increase over time.

Don't forget your calibration solution if you buy a PH pen. Some come from the factory and aren't within calibration so you'll have to do it yourself. Simple shit.

Mine has a PH 7 and a PH4/10 calibration. To calibrate, dip in PH 7 solution, wait for the number to settle, and adjust to 7.0

Then, if you have the 4/10 also, you'll dip in 4, calibrate to 4.0 and your done.

dont let the electrode or sponge dry up. it can ruin your pen.

Be careful, if you buy a cheap meter and the numbers its giving you are not accurate, you can do a lot more harm than good. I bought a Hanna meter for 25.00 and it simply wouldnt stay calibrated. It became a headache and I just couldnt afford a better one.

I hear this a lot. I can't afford it. Well, you get out of what you invest into it. Time, money, equipment, etc. So usually it's worth it. My hanna works pretty good. No problems yet. Watch out for the pens/meters that you cannot calibrate. Once they go out, they're done.
