First Grow

Started germinating seeds yesterday. Tap water dampened paper towel inside a ziploc bag. I have this sitting with a towel over it in my grow tent. I have half of my T5 on in the room to keep things at about 75F. I checked today to see where they were and to move to a new paper towel dampened with RO. I checked my tap today and found the ph was closer to 8 from the looks. Not happy with that. Not sure what it would have done if left. But my RO clocked in at 6.5 and I thought that would be better.

One seed looked to have the tiniest little tap root showing. I hope I didn't touch it because I moved it before I noticed the tap root showing just slightly.

I am also holding the grow tent around 70RH as once the seeds are ready to go into soil I want my environment to already be stable. I have 5 Gallon fabric potters. I used a mixture of FFOF, and happy frog with about a 32 oz spot in the top middle that is pure happy frog. I misted these with RO water today to just to keep the top of the soil from getting dusty under the light. Thought a bit of moisture soaking in at this point also wouldn't hurt anything as long as I wasn't soaking anything.

These are autoflowering plants I am starting so I am planting them in the final 5G pots as soon as I have enough tap root.

For veg I plan on putting 3 under my T5 and two under my 230W LED (Full spectrum)

After some reading on here about germination I decided to check back on my seeds in the paper towel. It's been roughly 36 hours since I put them in there. They all had cracked and were showing small tap roots starting to come out. None were longer than an 1/8" probably. One was barely through the shell. I immediately put them into soil. ( I wish I had thought to photograph them ) Tap root down roughly 1/2 to 3/4in into soil. Soil is nice and damp but not soaking.

Still running around 75F and 70RH. I did not cover the potters at all being the whole room is high humidity. I am running a warm mist humidifier that is misting right over them. I collected them up under the T5 for warmth and to help orient the seedlings if thats a thing. Still on only 4 bulbs of my T5 with them about 45" above the plants. Gonna leave the light up high until some good growth starts. I need to look into when exactly I should start lowering it and when to start light cycle. I am guessing about two weeks after coming thru the soil.

Thanks for that tip. I will prolly wait for them to start breaking thru the soil some before I lower it. For now I am just spraying them with the water bottle as I see the top of the soil starting to dry out. Was thinking every 12 hours or so might be good. But in 6 hours today I had half of my surface soil looking light. Will keep a close on that at this stage. Being in full size pots and fabric at that is prolly gonna mean I have to work harder to keep them nice and moist. No other developments at this point. Environment holding steady. Lights on 24HR. Also I am going to temporarily flip my clear plastic plant saucers and use them as humidity domes, maybe that will hold moisture close to the surface a little longer.

Thank god I decided on doing the makeshift humidity domes. I got home from work today and, I guess I had forgotten to fill my humidifier this morning. It was empty and the tent humidity had fallen to about 25! My soil was still nice and dark and felt damp to the touch. Misted them just a little and refilled my humidifier. After that experience I will never go without some type of humidity cover on seedlings!

Still no plants broken through the soil though I would be surprised to see that. Seeds have been in the soil for about 36 hours. I am just antsy to see them and know that they are alive and well!

Temp was also right about 80F when I got home. Not sure if the humidity was helping stabilize the temp at 75 or what. I didn't change anything yet. I like the 75 but I think 80 is just as well anyway. I'll see what happens with temp when my humidity corrects itself.

Seems a lot of mither over something I find so simple. I place seeds on wet paper towel with wet paper towel on top. Put inside two plates or similar and place in airing cupboard where my boiler is. Once the tap root is visable usually in 2 to 3 days I put in rapid rooters and put back in airing cupboard for 2 to 3 days until they sprout. Once sprouted and few cm tall I put rapid rooter in soil in small pot and stick them in grow room under a light with a small fan lightly blowing. Keep soil slightly wet by watering small amount every couple of days. 2 weeks later hey presto nice healthy plant growing. Good luck with your grow buddy

Definetely not trying to over-complicate something simple. Just new to this. Honestly never even been around a grow. Never germinated anything since 4th grade science. Nervous. Over-thinking probably because I have put a lot of money into gathering all the supplies and seeds and have absolutely no knowledge of growing anything that I didn't learn on google searches in the last 3 months lol. Thanks for the luck. Hope I have read enough luck need not be a factor.

When u get seeds that u can plant 1/2 inch down under loose soil and they pop in less then a day you got some vigor. Greenpoints TOMBSTONE seeds did that for me last run. Planted them into 7 gallon smart pots directly. Be careful watering if u do this. Dont overdo it, let them get thirstier as they age....then water/ No transplant shock ever, but watering is a pita the first 10 days or so.......u want it humid in your grow area for almost a month/

Super nerve wracked not being able to see whats going on with them. I cannot wait til I see them break soil. Hoping I didn't botch anything. I'm too poor to lose these seeds:shock:

I know a lot of people use paper towels etc... many different ways to start the seeds. I personally have had great success with just soaking the beans for day or two, until I see them starting to split. That's when I plant them in pre-watered container. This method has worked for me every time.

I think on the next round I'll be soaking til they sink. Damp paper towel til they split and I can see taproot orientation then straight into nice moist soil.

You can let them split right in water, I normally use a shot glass. And I don't like waiting for tap to grow, so I don't accidentally fuck with it. Tap root orientation should not be a concern either, as long as you keep that medium moist nature will take care of the rest.

I'm with you on not "growing" a tap root. I but I do like to at least see them splitting so I can put that side down. Most of mine had a touch of tap root showing. but when I looked at them 12 hours before only 1 had split at all so I left them.

Try not overthink stuff and worry. As said before it's a weed and it will grow. Sorry if I seemed a bit of an ass I totally understand your worries after forking out cash to set this up. We are here to help now so let's get these babies going.

The more tap root showing the more ya can fuck em up soak twelve hours warm 25 c they will all sink and crack if kept at 25 and then strate into rootriot or jiffy plug then back in prop at 25 till sprout you gonna wait longer planting them in big pots as the tap root searching for the bottom ov pot

My worrying is subsided for now. I can see now I have 5 healthy ladies! Just over 48 hours in and all are sprouting.

I usually fold the seeds into a moistened paper towel, put the wettness in a baggie and fold the baggie over...leaving a bit of air space open.......but if I know its a new drop or a vigorous strain I plant straight into the final container (a 5 or 7 gallon fabric pot).
