First grow since i got old!! Who wants to help?

Back in the day we turned our nose at homegrown.
But if this damn mouse keeps getting into my tomato shoots we are going to have to make the spaghetti sauce from the pot. and smoke the kale.

Peace brother , enjoy your vacation. See you when you return. Hopefully I will have some true progress to show.
quick peek at todays work load. Big fan......test trial ....it lowered heat to 72 at 300w with janked temp 4 inch ductwork.

I finally got a few plants in the cabinet. After building, improving, .....and scrapping several kinds of "easy" '"cheap" gimmicks posted around the net I have ordered a cool tube. Not saying im giving up on a bare 600watt bulb in this cabinet by any means. But it is past time to get some plants into flower and I feel 600 watts behind glass is probably better than 300 watts bare. Its been non stop around with the family here on top of me running 5 pages worth of trials monitoring - charting and trying different ideas.
I made the road trip and purchased a 6 inch 435 cfm exhaust and installed as above but then removed the scrubber as it was too restrictive.
with 600 watts I couldn't get consistent stable temps below 86ish but had a couple designs that held good right there. Problem being is I still have a temperature differential between 9 and 11 degrees between cabinet and room with open door to rest of house during trials.
I am about mid way in the high portion of my variable speed 300 watt.
I've been rock solid for a few hours last night and all day today. at 75.3 with a differential of 2.8 deg. Sweet spot for nice tight nuggets if I remember correctly.

My piddling has led me to believe that vertical may be the answer to or at least a part of my quest for 600 bare bulb watts of fake sunshine.

I didn't neglect the plants any during this although two morning cases of bulb burns due to overnight growth.
But up close picking plants for the cabinet today i see something i don't think is heat stress.
After last watering (plain water - dechlorinated)...... three days ago i believe.

been a couple weeks thought id check back in see how your doing, from your last posts I noticed you've done a lot of upgrading. pretty tired right now but from what I gathered your having problems with the temps and the fan. do you have a speed controller attatched, if not I think you can order the modules on ebay for around $10 + delivery, also with the scruuber, is it possible to put it on the output side of the fine? then you wont lose half as much as the intake side would.

keep up with modifications till you get it just right for you and post up some more pictures when your next on riu

Welcome back!

Just stopped in to check temp. 78.8. I've been running 600w for a few days now and have been running at 77 at half speed on the new fan. I've been pretty busy and haven't spent the time to update lately. Im fixin chicken on the grill at the moment but will take new photos and a full update after dinner.

I can't say things are optimum yet but I was able to get things stable before life decided to need some attention. My cabbi is operating on its own as I have attended to a few unforeseen necessities. Only once has the Mrs. had to intervene and the dimmable ballast was her fix. Temps crept to 82 so she backed off to 450w and when I returned it had stabilized at 78. "I" of coarse turned the light back up and increased the fan just a hair. Ambient room temp is crucial. The weather has been exceptionally warm for almost a week. This is good for my studies on Room/Cabinet temp differential moving into summer, But one must not get too far away when the Mrs. decides to clear the air with the whole house fan.

As it runs:
1 - Pineapple Kush
1 AK47
each in 7 gallon pot - FFOF soil
600w HPS - in cool tube
435cfm exhaust - terminated out exterior widow - Stealthed through twin fan window unit and looks as if one fan running
16" oscillating fan

Exhaust doesn't suit me yet as it has too many turns with current routing. and is still a bit noisy. I was planning on turning this dresser into a false front cabinet for Moms and clones, I am trying to come up with a way to nestle the fan in side the dresser adjacent to the exhaust window and then straight into the cabinet/cool tube. but that puts the ducting in the cabinet where I want to be full of nuggets, and my take too much room from the dresser. This would greatly shorten the ducting and have the benefit of enclosing the fan for sound purposes.
I had the most luck using the fan to pull air through the scrubber but it was still too restrictive to and didn't let me get temp difference less that 12 deg. So I have it hanging in the room out of my way with just a duct booster just scrubbing away. As things are getting a tad aromatic in the room of a morning after things have been idle. but for now I have the exhaust creating negative pressure in the room venting outdoors so its not yet an issue. I fear my homemade scrubber may be in for replacement at some point in the future. I can purchase one as cheap as getting enough actual carbon to fill mine.

I too have a lot of re-arranging to do... phone/internet guy is coming tomorrow to install a new line and well... lets say I have far too much on-show..

On a whole, sounds like your doing fine and are more into fine tuning than anything else. keep up the good work, cant wait to see some photos.

Wow! Spider mites.Where. Could you point that out in a picture please, Or explain you theory. The dreaded mite was a big factor when I shut my grow down years ago.

Cal deficiency? I try to do my homework before posting questions and I think cal deficiency should have effected the whole plant or plants. I am down to believing that the problem was either nuet burn or some kind of lockout caused by the water. Our municipal water had a moldy smell out of the tap and made the coffee taste funny. The water was drawn 3 days prior to use as always, THe signs popped up 2 days after plain watering. Localized mainly on lowest set of leaves on bottom. They did not get any worse after those pictures taken and the new grown looks healthy. I am waiting on my partner for a round of new pictures. Camera broke.

Thanks for the help and please help educate me on both the mite issue and the cal def.

Yes I have and I have all day today. lol. I never finished the finer nuances on the cab before because I never had plants inside at 150w that filled it.
I stripped and cleaned out all the old Mylar and painted everything titanium white so no critters can hide in the folds. The cab will run on its own as is except for startup and shutdown due to current ducting. I will be rerouting and adding a self closing damper to solve that issue. As we speak it is 77.1 deg with 47% rh. -- room is 73.7 and 54% respectively.

Good luck with the cable guy. I gutted all the cable and phone wires from this room so they have no need to get even close to this room. and at 1/2 speed on the fan it cant be heard unless you lean on the wall. today will be spent trying to improve flow rate and lower velocity/sound level.

This is what Mite damage looks like.
To be sure, cover hair (baseball cap turned backwards) so you don't transfer them if they are present.
Grab your magnifying glass (x40), roll the stem between your fingers to turn leaf over to examine.
Take your time, look carefully, should you see any go ahead and stop no use looking for more you'll just end up spreding them everywhere, just assume they are and treat as such.
Wash your hands and scope.

Keeping my fingers crossed you don't have them.

I do have a digital microscope and have yet to see critters, But I lost the battle to them 15 years ago by not catching it early and I still worry. What I used before killed damn near every plant in the house because neem wasn't getting the job done.
This time around I am taking a more active approach. On the clones in the bubbler I started getting what looked like powdery mold. So I have started a neem oil regimen for the next three weeks as early cure/prevention. I will check the plants over really well today. My question is. if it were mites, and that damage came up suddenly after watering, Left untreated wouldn't it be spreading. Its been a couple weeks, and it doesn't appear to be. the affected leaves didn't get any worse and no new signs. Fed three days ago and treated with neem the night before last AT LIGHTS OUT.

Mites have to walk everywhere (with real tiny legs) Or Hitchhike.
The lack of spreading could mean your grow is free of flies. IF you have them

Every plant exact same condition Samke level on plants) all at once?. I have 15 plants total and 4 were in different location(cabinet). although in the same room. with the same guy tending them so I can see my spreading it among them. But I am very good about washing up, and changing cloths if I have been in the garden or woods. and nothing comes in here without being scrubbed kitchen clean.
Now im worrying again. haha.I think I will go shower, spay myself with neem and break out the microscope. Please tell me you could be wrong.

It's easy for me to be wrong, just ask the g/f. LOL

It could be a early CA defy that recovered. Lets hope so.

Hahahaha - I started growing again just like you. The girls were adults and could handle the idea. Although when my daughter came home one nite and saw me and her mom trimming in the livingroom she had a surreal moment

Are you using Cal/Mag? Another great additive for repelling pests is Pro Tekt silica.

An easy way for me to keep track of any flying critters I may have in my cab is a yellow sticky trap. They will get covered with any pests flying about.


Everything looks spectacular so far. You are going to need a bigger room!

Well I do not see any critters and have no new signs so of damage so far. I will keep checking visually and plan to treat every third day for 5 treats even if I don't see any. I am treating walls and all for now. The neem is systemic also and wont harm unless overused and not protected from HID lighting for a couple of days. I raised the light to about 30" and dropped to 300w for a day. light still up but back to 450w for now. I treat again tomorrow.

No to the cal/mg. and I haven't located any locally. I do have Epsom and molasses. Since I am almost certain it was the water and my own ineptitude that caused the issue I have since installed better filtration (entire house , it was causing some .....discomfort among the humans also after the connection was made) and am leery of adding anything to the soil. I did feed 1/8 strength last watering to start working back up.

Yes!!! to the bigger room. LOL! I hope to get pics posted soon. My oldest daughter is my grow mate/photog and has the day off also. Since being so busy I had not flipped the lights yet and its kind of cramped now and I have already put two plants in the cabinet and two plants the wife wanted for the bedroom window. Over crowding will exacerbate any bug issues and thinning to a more manageable state will be good.
