First Grow. Need help.

Okay, well I am a newbie at this kind of stuff and I was wondering If I could get some help. I am trying to grow in a small area, without having to much smell or without being to noticeable. I am growing indoors. My grow area is about 1 1/2 ft. wide x 1ft long, by 2 ft. tall. Is this big enough to just grow one plant? Well if it is, these are the steps I will take. I am new at this, so correct me wherever im wrong.

First, I germinate. I stick the seeds in between about six moist paper towels. I fold the paper towels up and put it in between two plates. ( Are paper plates fine?)

Then after i germinate, I take my seeds that are cracked open with white roots coming out and put them into the soil. The soil is potting soil from the store and has fertilizers in it already. I stick my finger in about 1/2" down and place the seed in, white part down. Then i cover gently with soil and water it. I haven't decided wether to use plastic or clay yet? Any ideas?

Okay, so about the soil. I am using some osh hardware brand. It says it has enough fertilizers in it to last 4 weeks. So yea.

I am trying to produce buds in the shortest amount of time. Say I waited until it sprouted above the dirt and waited a month keeping the lights on 18/6. Then after the month I switch to 12/12 to begin flowering. Would this work? And if it would, how much marijuana would it produce roughly? Also, after the 4 weeks (1 month) when i switch over to the 12/12 should i fertilize it again? And I have heard don't use miracle grow, so what kind of stuff should I use?

Lights:
- For lights I am going to try and find a small, flourescent light that is fairly cheap and only around 6 inches long (Due to the small space)

The setup:
- I have the growbox covered with foil with the duller side facing out towards the light and plant. I will put the pot in the middle, and have a plastic water catch thing under the pot. How high should the light be away from the plant during when its first put in the soil after germination, or during flowering, and so on? I will have a 4" desk fan in there running to strengthen the stems and to also keep it cool. There is no ventilation holes really, but should opening it up for about 30 minutes a day or so work? Also, the growbox is in my closet, but is not my closet. If that makes sense. For the dark times should i just place a blanket over the box just to make sure no light gets in? I will also have a thermometer inside the grow box to make sure it doesnt get to hot.

So basically, is this a good start? I am mostly wondering if 1 month of growing and then about 6-8 weeks of flowering is good? Or what is reccomended for a small growing space. I would like to do it without as much cutting and such as possible to. So any info on how much to water, or anything about how far the lights need to be? Also should the fan run all the time or just while the lights are on? One more thing. How bad is the smell when im growing, because I would prefer for my roommate not to find out.

i wouldn't use paper plates i, i would imagine that they would absorb to much moister from the paper towels. i don't grow in soil so i cant help you there. get some cfl's(compact florescent) for lights.

pots - both plastic and clay are fine. put you seed in a small pot then transplant after about two weeks into a big one.

space - i dont think 2ft is enough space, remember you need space in between the light and the plants, plus the actual pot will be at least a foot. width and length is pretty small as well.

Foil - don't use this as it creates heat spots which can burn the plant

Soil - i thought it would be fine to use soil with slow release fertilizers but it actually burns the plants when they are really young (nute burn) the best option is to dilute the soil by creating a mixture of half perlite, half organic soil. perlite is easy to find.

Lights - doing 18/6 for a month then 12/12 is fine. but make sure u read up about lights. you can't just use a plain old florencent light because it does'nt contain the right wavelengths. most people use CFLs durring veg and HPS during flower (read the FAQ)

a way to tell how far to have your lights from the plant is by putting ur hand underthem, if it starts to heat up considerably then its too hot. i put my 400w HPS about a foot away from my plants when they were veging, now i have moved them to about 5inches and put a fan in (fans reduce the heat)

Watering - you can't teach that, u just have to figure it out.

check out the FAQ, grow journals and growers guides and just read read read read and read

peace out and good luck

Shiva, I sat down and read all 18 pages of that grow log. It's simply amazing. I hope I can be that successful my first grow.

Hmm. Okay, well I had a few questions still with lighting. I found a water timer and have no clue how to use it, because it is some wierd thing. I don't know if I will end up having to buy a new one, but hopefully not. Okay well on the light it says, Capsylite 120W 120V. Would this be good for a fairly small growing area? I can take pics tommorrow if you don't know what I'm talking about. As for the light timer, I guess i can look at that and mess around with it.

Okay. I have decided to just use a PC case. I have ventilation, and everything in it. And a fan. Okay, so how long should the fan be on daily? All the time? Or could I put it on another time like the light timer? Also, how long/high would I grow it so I don't run out of room? And would my light in the previous post work?
