whachoo doin? get that kitty outa thurr... pets-pest.. i love kitties, but they don't belong in the grow room. anywho tho, great looking bud farmer, im just starting my 1st grow journal, 3rd grow dinafem blue widow. maybe check it out? early in the journal seeds are 4 days old. props on the purple buds tho mate

Hey Bluewidow, I know know.... My kitty is serving a special purpose, though... He is a trained trimmer who gets high off of eating the bottom 1/3 of fan leaves. He is also crouching all day on top of my grow tent, waiting for a burglar to arrive. He will precisely slash your jugular vein if you approach our tent... I just have to go through each bud once in a while and scotch-tape them whenever I find his hair.

After MUCH reading, I decided to nute them with Cha Ching / molasses all the way till harvest day AND I will VERY CAREFULLY cure them using hygrometer. My take on this is that the purpose of flushing is not to remove salt/chemical taste from the bud, but it's the act of reducing chlorophyll as much as possible - thus the taste appears to be smoother. I am going to give the buds chance to grow as much as possible right up to the point of harvest, THEN I will carefully cure them taking a little longer because my buds will have higher amount of green that needs to be broken down to make smoother smoke. In the curing process, I decided to use hygrometer because I really don't want to ruin all my effort of growing with either harsh/grassy end product or mold...

That's my thought for the night.

Yeah, I think it's a good investment. I spent a few hours doing some online shopping last night - hygrometer, vacuum sealer, digital scale... I'm all set. I can cure with my eyes closed!

' Flushing is a very important part of cannabis cultivation. Flushing is a method that is used to remove waste from your growing medium. Flushing will help to eliminate the harshness you experience when smoking. Pot that has been fertilized right up to harvest is harsh to smoke, sometimes the joint will even sizzle and pop as unmetabolized fertilizer salts combust. Unflushed pot leaves black ash, is hard to keep lit and burns your throat. Pot which has been organically grown and properly flushed is more flavorful and fragrant, burns easily, leaves grey ash, is easier on the throat and is much more pleasurable to smoke.

Flushing should be done at a very minimum of 2 weeks before harvest. Flushing is done by taking water and pouring it into the plant’s growing medium.

Once the flushing process has begun, DO NOT add any fertilizer to your flowering plants. At this point you will only be using plain water to feed your plants. Remember, you are flushing because you want to remove the fertilizers and waste from your growing medium to improve the overall quality of your end product.'

Once nutes (salts and minerals) are absorbed from plant's root, they are transported in the form of ion. And once they reach the final destinations (leaves, buds), they form tissue, THC, chlorophyl, essential oil and pigments, etc, and stay there, except a few mobile elements like N, which can be reused from their own broken-down tissue transported back and upwards. When you give them pure water, where do you think those Fe, Zn, P, K, that plants already have in plenty all go? NOTHING leaves plants body except for CO2, O2 and H2O while they are alive. No minerals or salts become gaseous form and leave plant's pores. Plants don't pee or poo. Do you think you are really "flushing" anything out of their body?? Voila! That's why spinach taste like spinach and tomatoes taste like tomatoes right out of their well fertilized soil. So I came to the conclusion that flushing for the specific intention of eliminating nutes from buds is false.


That being said, there must be some benefit of starving the plants near harvest and there must be some truth about the "harsh taste" from not flushing the 90% of people are talking about (although, I swear no one has undergone the double-blind test on their own to prove that, either). So I came to a speculation that nuting them right up to the harvest will preserve too much chlorophyl in their plant matter, so it would leave harsher taste and leave black ash (huge molecules like chlorophyl doesn't burn as easily as cellulose, if they are not broken down to some extent). And that's why I'll be SUPER ANAL during the curing process. I want to make it nice and slow to break down the extra amount of chlorophyl that my buds might have because of not flushing.

I WILL go easy on Cha Ching, though. I'll give them just enough so they are not starving too much.

Good shit, I'm really eager to see how it goes, I've honestly always flushed so can't fight the contrary. But I want a smoke report and your thoughts on it!

Oh man... I was real nervous putting that out there. I was ready for the crossfire from everyone when I hit the submit button.... Thanks for taking as is. Having studied molecular biology and organic chem makes me extra skeptical about things like this...

I'm not one to push my opinions on someone else, everyone is free to do what they want! Plus I'd like to see it! That's the cool thing about horticulture, you can try new things and you're in control! :weed:

Still no sign of amber trichomes on buds... I'm very anxious to harvest... Buds are looking SO DELICIOUS!

The hydrometer for curing and vacuum sealer arrived, too. The hygrometer is being calibrated right now.

Hey jfk, thanks for your compliments. I've never been around growers, but I've grown LOTS of plants, and did LOTS of reading for sure. Having the knowledge in molecular biology and organic chemistry helps, too. I've been going through lots of threads here and trying to figure out why people grow them in certain ways and the truths behind it. I'm certainly hooked on growing. I'll stick around here for a while. :)

Thanks for the advice on harvesting, too. The sativa started to foxtail and it's getting fatter! I want to cut the sativa as soon as I see the sign of amber. I want to wait a little longer for PK, I think. Ok, back to reading on curing!
