I just started my first grow with a 400 watt mh and I plan to use it all the way through flowering, I have read that it will work fine. I have one bagseed and three of an unknown kind strain. I topped the bagseed three weeks ago and put it on 12/12. On feb 4. Can anyone tell me of any experience they have growing seed to harvest with only mh. I plan to get some gel2root cloning cups tomorrow and take some cuttings so I can set up a perpetual grow .

Years ago, in the nineties, when I first starting growing indoors, my first crop was totally done with a few 400w MH. The buds were very mediocre. They lacked density and were very spindly. The buds would not close up.
MH are not the right lights for flowering, it doesn't have enough of the red and yellow spectrum. You will get buds but they won't be all that good.
I would highly recommend getting a 400w HPS for flowering. If you are going to set up a perpetual system you will need another light anyway.
Edit:
Oh yeah, ideally you should be taking your clones while the plants are vegging. The plants will be in grow mode and so will the cuttings you take from them.
This improves success rate with your clones and they will root a lot quicker. Not saying you cant take them during 12/12, just not ideal.

I have a grow going right now with a 400w mh all the way through. I am about 5 weeks into flower now. It seems to be doing pretty good but this is my first real grow so I have no baseline. I am ordering a hps this week just because I need another light for a perpetual grow. I'll put up a pic to see one of my buds under a mh.

Nice setup you should end up doing very well for yourself. Many of the mountings for HID laps are able to be interchanged i.e. bulbs can be either hps or mh if your worried but i would not be the only other advice i have for you is to take your cutting after you have i.d. ed the female but before you let the go into flowering because the clones will be on a veg schedule for a couple weeks at least.

Halides work well for flowering, you just need new bulbs and to throw more lumens per sf than normal if you can.

A few times I have grown full term with halides and the buds ended up every bit as good as with a hps grow by just throwing more lumens than you would with an HPS. Or a smaller area for your light...
