Won't go into details, but I just moved to a site where I can grow outside in full sun. I started half-assed growing cannabis in the '80s, had to stop for about 30 years, and I started again about six years ago, still small-time out of a closet with lights hung.
Random thoughts: Cannabis plants are tough mothers. I moved from Salinas CA down to LA and the increase in heat has been brutal on even the cactus and succulent plants that I brought with me. I had some desert plants with reputations for surviving on practically zero water that have just flat-out died because of the change. Salinas has the mildest weather I've ever lived in, and LA County has been having a heatwave. Any given day, it's about 20 degree F hotter in LA than it is in Salinas, most likely.
But the cannabis plants don't seem the least bit stressed, as long as they get enough water. And these plants were not spoiled before I put them out in the sun. I started them inside, moved them outside in a morning sun spot for about a month, moved them back inside after space became available under lights, accidentally left them in the dark for three days, then finally put them out on a blazing hot patio in LA County. Despite all that, they are holding up great.
I went out to collect pollen off the male this morning and when I shook the branches some tiny little critters fell off. I think they might have been thrips because they are not as round-looking as spider mites. I considered spraying with neem but didn't want to risk burning any leaves in the hot sun so instead I just misted with water because I have read that spider mites don't like to get wet. So I went out a few hours later with a piece of white paper to check again, and maybe three or four bugs fell off my three plants when I shook them. So I figure I will just leave them be for now, because for all I know the bugs that are falling off are predators eating the bugs that are attacking my plants.
A couple days ago I took cuttings off the females and today or tomorrow I'll put them in starter cubes. I can't decide whether to let them root indoors or out. Outside would give them plenty of heat and light, but the days are getting shorter and I want the cuttings to veg, not flower more than they already have.
