FINALLY, first legit grow room, in an attic

Hey guys thanks for checking out my thread. i have been waiting for the day for a long long time. so i have grown a few times in the past, indoor and outdoor, but never really lived in a ideal place to do it. and i never had the money to really do it either. but now im finally building my grow room.

im going to be rocking a 400watt hps in my flowering room. my flowering area is 3.5 x 3.5. behind this i will have my inline fan and carbon filter (hasnt got here yet). the cfm of my room is less than 200 so my a/c is simply way too fit for the job. ill also have a 6" duct fan pulling air from directly outside from a vent in the roof.

when building what i have done so far, everything was just a huge mess. there was no floor up there, just piles and piles of insulation. measuring everything out and just being up there in the heat was ridiculous. before i got started i was nothing less than determined, and only the thought of free weed made me keep thinking that it would even be possible. sure enough after a shit ton of planning i finally have something started.

im still waiting on quite a few things until my grow room is complete. ill also be taking another trip to lowes as well. but hopefully ill have things totally up and running in 6 days. or that when my fan and carbon filter will be here.

right now i have 3 bagseed that i have been vegging for a little while in my closet. ill be taking clones from the better of the three and ill continue to grow it until i can get my hands on something better.

so yeah guys, tell me what you think so far.

Looks like you're on your way, should be sick! I'm happy to hear you've got the resources you need now, I know the feeling. Just make sure to keep all electrical equipment above waist level, don't want it in the splash zone. bongsmilie

One thing...

You mentioned the heat up there while you've been working.

Are you planning on using AC to cool the area?

If not you could insulate your room heavily which should keep more manageable levels inside the flowering area.


Make sure to test your new room once complete for at least 24hours. I prefer 48 hour tests.

Once testing is complete and you can keep the room under 75F/24C then you'll be golden for flowering.


I use a very similar sized footprint with a 400w and consistently achieve +400g each harvest.


Keep us posted with your build and subsequent testing.

yeah Jon, you can see the a/c in the pictures framed into the wall. and yea, im going to let it all run to make sure it all runs well on it own. between all my fans and a/c my temp should be right on lock. like i said, my a/c could cool a room 5 times the space of my grow room. so ill have it set on low at 78 because thats probably all it will take.

Yo man everything looks so legit. And those babies look super healthy they look like some kind of indica did you use any nutes on them yet? Are you doin lst? They look like theyre traines in some.form. Sick tho dude il be watching

Probably too late to tell you this now but that tarp you used for the walls and floor should of been white.
The black surface is going to absorb heat and radiate it back out. plus its not reflecting any light back into the grow.

I agree you should do mylar or panda film for the walls. Where are you venting the heat to? If that attic is as hot as you say I would try to purge the heat if you can. I would think it will be difficult to maintain temps and if you vent that air conditioner into the attic it is going to be way too hot might even become a fire hazard. Just trying to help.

thanks man, glad you took a look. i told you i have been waiting while being eager as hell to get started. i did use some b'cuzz grow but at a very light ppm, the foxfarm ocean forest is great soil and is just packed with goodies for your plant already. but im preparing to take clones, so i dont want their diet to have too much nitrogen. i hear that a high nitrogen clone get shocked real bad. so i have been feeding distilled only for about two weeks. i need cal-mag so bad for that stuff.

but rasta, make sure to mix lime with your soil bro. the soil of my ph was great at first, but i read somewhere that they use sea shells to buffer the ph instead of lime. and because of it your ph does not stay as stable. i checked the ph of my run off the other day and it was around mid 5 or so. so dont make the same mistake my friend! add some lime to your ffof, i know ill be getting some very soon for my next batch that will soon start.

oh yead dude, this isnt my first rodeo. idk if your read, but i have a 6" inline fan and carbon filter. it will obviously be located right next to my light. the air will vent into the attic space, but attics get hot as hell anyways. i dont see any fire hazard considering a/c units are usually hanging outside windows in the hot ass sun and they have never been a hazard.

ill also have a 6" duct fan pulling air from outside and hopefully directly into the intake of my a/c. this will create a flow of fresh air through my room 24/7. and because my inline fan and carbon filter is rated for 400 cfm, ill run it half speed. i bought a fan speed controller for this

i dont foresee any issues with heat. oh i did forget to mention that i will be insulating the walls and ceilings. i want to put as less workload on my a/c as possible

so today i got a little bit of work done after work.

i hooked up my 20 amp outlet to my kitchen lights breaker. before now it was 4 cfl bulbs running off a 20! lol

then i finished the massive amount of duck taping on all the creases, cant let any smell get out.

and then the a/c. being the longest project today, im pretty happy with it. i was worried that air coming from outside may be too hot during the day, and i didnt want heat flurries in my grow room. so i sealed my duct to the vent in the roof and then ran it down to the intake of my a/c. i also fabricated my own filter in the a/c unit. this way i know my air will be somewhat clean.

other than all that i have been putting up my reflective insulation so i can take a work load off my a/c.

i would like to thank everyone for the compliments and stopping by. particularly the guys that didnt come in here and make newb ass comments as if i were a complete fucking idiot. its so easy to tell who really grows and who doesnt

oh i did forget to mention the duct running to my a/c is where one of my duct fans will be going. im getting a 4" fan instead though, and ill probably do the same in my veg room. i just wanted to get it all installed, so when i do get my fan here shortly ill just have to cut the duct and hook it up. so before anyone tells me its not going to work, please understand what i just typed.

what kind of controller did you buy? a Variac? i ask becuase i want ppl to get the right one and not risk their fan or self to hazard. Variac controllers are the only type that are really made for brushless fans and thats what a inline fan is. when you slow down ur fan with a speedster or other one meant for a brush motor you are creating heat and not saving on energy. if you got a reg one send it back and use the money on a controller that will save you money in the end(fan, and home cost more then a Variac)

Sire im not entirely sure to be honest. but i cant go back now, ill have to use whats on the way for now. i did plan on switching to a nicer fan, light, etc. later on after a few crops

finally got my door on too! it has a latch on both sides and i have weather strip all the way around it to make it air tight and to make sure no light gets in or out. and my girls are beginning to outgrow their closet setup. i cant wait to finish this room and flower these babies IMG_20130818_230907.jpgIMG_20130818_190225-1.jpgIMG_20130818_190310.jpg

I ended up with severe humidity problems from using an over sized A/C. If the "outside" of your A/C is still inside the attic, it may not function at all or so poorly to not work. I would think twice before attempting to grow in an attic.
