Few very bottom small leaves Turning yellow Because of lack of light?

I have a small CFL grow. I have a few plants (2) I think that have a few small leaves on the very bottom that have tuned yellow and are dead. I also had 1 plant that the bottom of it probably 10 leaves died and just looked like brown spots on the leaves. I have since removed that plant and the others seemed to be fine. 2 days later 2 others are showing similar signs. Other than that the plants seem really healthy, well what do I know though.......


I am using MG moisture control soil, in a vented a/c room tempature under lights aprox 70 - 75 F. I water proabably every 2 days and always stick my finger in the soil to feel that it is dry at the bottom. I have used no nutes, and let me water sit for 24 hours before using it. I think that it may be caused due to the lack of light on the bottom of the plant as the lights are focused on the tops of the plants. I am not quick to blame the soil because it has been fine till now. Also think maybe I had over watered and the soil that "feeds" the plants may have "activated" to may nutes for the plants. I have done a little research on this soil and have talked to a few people who use it and they say it is not a problem for them. Here are some pics thank you for your help

it looks like a nute problem, but you haven't added any. Do you have a soil test kit to test the pH of your soil. Lower leaves sometimes die off naturally, but this is def a problem. I would suggest checking your pH and flushing your plants with pH'd water and your plants look old enough for nutes. So i would look into that.

DON'T flush your plants. Give them a mild dose of nutes.


What's done is done. Feed and you will continue to keep the new and existing growth green.

It's because the light is not getting to the bitten this is normal most people take off the bottem leafs anyways to encorage air flow and upper node growth

I would highly suggest you find yourself a nutrient brand you know and trust (NOT MIRACLE GROW) and start adding 1/4 strength nut's into your water. Make sure to PH the water/nut mix before applying to the plants and keep around 6.5. Ive always used Botanicare's products (pro grow/pro bloom) along side Cal-Mag and then ajusted the PH with ZERO problems.


P.S Do NOT use Miracle Grow's moisture control next time! It tend's to maintain too much water in the soil and prevents it from aerating the roots which in return can result in root rot and a buildup of salt. In the future TRY and use Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil with added perlite for drainage.

Alright so from this I'm getting that I should not be using the MG soil, okay well fine, but to transplant at this stage??? Also there was mention to the fact that people remove the bottom leaves, just cut the leaf off at the stem? do you cut it off or peel it off (sounds dumb i know)Thanks for your help guys

Yes, your correct about the MG soil!I wouldnt transplant into better soil until your ready to put those baby's into 5 gallon containers, then I would definitely get some Fox Farms. In addition, you have two options as far as removing leaves goes! You can let it naturally fall off (which it will in time) or you can remove it by pinching down using your finger nails to cut through the stem. Some people prefer to use a clean blade, but finger nails have always worked fine for me.

Don't cut the leaves. When they are ready they can be "plucked" off. You'll know when the time is right young grasshopper.

Looks like a P.H. problem to me man check your p.h.

I shoot for 6.8 and the plants love me

And... I totally feel your pain, I used to have to order the stuff online until my hydro store decided to start sellin it.

I always take of the bottom leaves the first leaves to come are the first to die.Don't worry i think that you are doing ok to say that the lights that you are useing are only cfl's.I would love to get these plants under a h.p.s light you could be looking at a massive yeild.I am not one for selling my crop but on this occation i would 100% get rid of any crop that you have you will be able to pichk a h.i.p light up for the crop you have.But theplants look realy good considering the lighting.

Pretty sure I figured out what was causing the brown spots on the leaves. I don't think it was the soil. I saw a few flies in there the other day and I put a couple things of vingar with soap in the closet with a few fly strips, I have seen some small hair like looking flies in the vingar and a few fruit fly looking flys on the sticky strips, So for now I'm going to leave the soil as I believe this is curing the issue that I had at hand.
