feminized seed: good or bad?

I'm looking to branch out into some new strains, so I'm looking for seed to create good cloning mothers from.

I've read here that feminized seeds generally come from hermaphrodite plants which they force to breed with themselves. their offspring, though female, easily become hermie with a little stressing. I'm a bit worried about having any hermie genetics in my mothers. I have no problem initially with sexing and culling males if it ensures that I get good all-female genetics for mothers, but Id rather not go through with all of that if possible.

anybody have any opinion or real-world experience with this sort of thing?

Thanks-

MM

I think it depends on the method used to obtain feminized seeds (as far as Hermie feminized seeds go), and the method you mentioned is one of the easiest that anyone could do. I would certainly like to know about the hermie risks involved with buying feminized seeds from reputable seed banks.

My experience has been mixed, but feminized seeds do seem sensitive to light leaks. I found using a product called reverse by dutch masters decreased the amount of hermaphrodites and reversed stress hermies. It's a product they use to make seedless watermelons.

If you want a good mother, order some good genetics from a good seedbank and isolate the pheno that you like the most. I'd only mess with feminized seeds if you never planned on cloning and you're a 'from seed' kind of grower.

Well, you can either plant feminized seeds and get a female 90% of the time but pay a little more ooooor you can just get normal seeds for less and the best chance anyone can give you is 50/50. I think it's worthwhile to get feminized seeds...my two cents.

Yeah I had planned on doing a perpetual grow from seed using feminized autos so I wouldn't have to worry as much about light leaks because I could run the lights 18/6 or more (thus never have to worry about the sunlight in my room, or lights from my room being a problem, the plants could sleep whenever I do on the same schedule from seed to harvest).

But over the last week I've started to hear about hermie problems with feminized seeds, so I'm not very sure if it it still worth it to pay for feminized seeds. Does anyone know which sites have the least problems with feminized seeds going Hermie? I would presume the more popular seed banks would use more proper feminizing methods. Is there any method of feminizing seeds that doesn't increase the risk of hermies?

i just chopped an MK Ultra fem...no hermie problem for me...i cloned her no problem and i have had small light leaks from day 1...

I read somewhere that you can let a female plant go beyond flower and it will start growing pollen sacks as a last effort way to reproduce. The pollen from that female turned male (not hermie) will produce 100% female seed when pollinating another female flower with no stress induced.

I really want to do that and harvest the pollen on my next grow, if that will work. Anyone know for sure? Thanks, S

There is absolutely nothing wrong with feminized seeds. That is all I have used for quite a while and I have NEVER had a plant go hermie on me or had any other issues. And cloning is not affected one way or the other with feminized seeds, in my experience. I've grown nothing but clones from feminized seed-based plants for a while now and I have never had any problems. I believe the problem is usually so-called "growers" who don't have a clue what they are doing, blaming their self-created problems on the seeds/strain instead of the techniques (or lack thereof) being used.

I’ve done two grows with dutch passion’s orange bud feminized. Both times they have gone hermi on me, to be fare they were stressed quite a bit during both grows. First grow didn’t turn hermi until late in the grow, so none went to seed. Second grow went hermi a little earlier but all in all just got about 30 seeds from 5 plants. Smoked fine though and I’m using some of the seeds for my third grow. Fingers crossed they are feminized. Just gone 12-12 so should know shortly
