My seedlings are about two weeks old [planted after germination around January 1-3 not sure which day exactly] and I just recently found out that a fan was necessary for thin stems to thicken up. I've had the fan on for about a day now, and it blew over a few of my plants that I had to anchor with the slitted straw method. I'm wondering about how long will it take before my stems thicken up a bit?

And also, I'm using one light for 3 plants [I've got 8 plants and 2 lights] and one of my plants is exceptionally tall compared to the others and I wanted to put the light as low as possible to get to the small ones, and in turn I burnt the surface of the leaf on my tallest plant. Will the little burn spots heal, or will they stay?

One last thing, how long before my seedlings get into vegetative state?

[by the way, the wind is blowing the tallest plant. it's not really leaning that way, it goes straight up with the fan's off]

You need to create more light around the plants. They apear to me to be streaching way to much. My plants are 2 weeks old also and are extreemly shorter but have good thich growth of exploding leaves around the tops. Think about enclosing them more with more foil around and more light.

Im an amature so maybe someone will know more.

instead of moving the light down, move the plants up =)

I put them up closer to the light...I browsed the threads pretty far back and I figured they were stretching too much..just wanted to make sure, because I just set that up yesterday, all eight plants were originally all in one big pot and had the lights fairly close. I wasn't so sure what to do because I only have one flourescent light, so I had to use an incandescent for the other half! I've got to get to the store sometime soon and get another flourescent, but that won't be for another month, so I'll have to make do with the incandescent & flourescent working together.

Spindly stems can not support heavy flowering growth. An internal oscillating fan will reduce your humidity on the leave's stomata and improve the stem strength as well.

The importance of your internal air circulation can not be stressed enough. It will exercise your plants and make them grow stronger, while reducing many hazards that could ruin your crop.

I know, thank you. I was just wondering how long it'd take before the stems thicken up. I've had the fan on for a day now, and my poor plants keep getting blown over, that's why I'm asking.

I wouldnt think long...

They're starting to thicken up a bit, thank you =]. I switched from the slitted straw method to a wire anchor so they're getting wind on their stems, they seem to be standing straight up and not leaning on the wire. Thanks again.

you need to go to the store and get at least 4 more flouros incendesent will do diddly squat and 1 flouro is nothing thats why they are so tall and weak

Yep...more light, stronger plants. And your wind needs to be a gentle breeze, not hurricane force. Hoep this helps.

I am having the same problem. I'm using 2 of the long tubed fluorescent lights that u can just buy at walmartand they have helped the plant grow so far but they are getting tall and spindly so I bought a fan for it but i know I need to upgrade my lighting. Was just wondering if anyone would have any advice for me.

CFL's I like the 40-42 watt spiral. I have 3. The last 2 I set up I got a y adapt and I have 2 on one socket hanging above the plants with a reflective shield above them.
I keep them about 1-2" from plant.
Bulbs 8.95 ea.
y adapter .50
socket 2.00
For starting out I will use 1 light per plnt. probally for up to 2wks
and then I would like to have 2 per plant.

Oh by the way my plants look maybee a little more mature but they are really only 11 ds old.

incandescent cant do a thing they are totally the wrong light spectrum.
