I salvaged a fan from an exhaust hood for a stove and it has 3 wires red , black , and white.I was going to hook it to a heavy duty extension cord but when i stripped the wires the extension cord has white, black and green wires? I need to know which wires go where? and also if this will even work at all?

do you know what voltage the fan is? you may need to wire it into an adapter to convert the current from AC to DC.

check labels for voltages and amps The fan could be 240 volt meaning 2 hot wires ( black and Red) white neutral and there may be a ground screw definitely attach an ground from any cord or what ever you use to hook the thing up to the metal housing on the fan. Or sometimes the black feeds the fan and the red feeds a light or something. Maybe try using a cord with the female end cut off to test it and hook up only the black white and ground and see if it works just be sure to unplug it quick if it doesn't sound good
