While looking for Db information on various fans available I stumbled across these tests on youtube.
Tested by hydromag under the same conditions. Various tests including Db , airflow and power consumption with each fan under different conditions.

1m of ducting with no filter
Filter and 4m of ducting
Filter with 2 90degree elbows.
Filter with 360 degree ducting.

S&P TD silent 8"

Isomax silenced (formerly airforce2) 8"

Tornado box fan

Gekko Box fan

There are many more fans tested but these are ones which I hear mentioned. Especially the TD silent and isomax.
You folks over the water will know the Isomax under a different name. I believe they are all pretty much the same fan regardless of the branding. Being a quality axial built into a silencer.
I personally own the Airforce2 8" and it has served me well for over 5 years but I'm looking to replace it if I could find something better.

The efficiency seems to be far greater on the axial fans compared to the squirrel cage fans. But the Db rating is a fair bit lower on box fans, however given it should be related to the airflow and the drop off is considerably higher with box fans it all seems relative.

One thing I would of liked to see is sound measured when using acoustic ducting as those of us who spend so much on a fan for quiet running would certainly be using acoustic ducting.
Also seems measuring the amount of noise a high air flow fan creates with regular ducting is a bit silly considering the more air flow through the ridged duct will create more Db. It doesn't really measure the loudness of the motor, just the noise of the airflow which in my case can be blocked by acoustic duct and reasonable sound proofing. The tone of the fan however isn't as easy to soundproof.

Anyhow if its useful to anyone its a bonus. If anyone else has any fair tests to share feel free to post them.
