Explain to me "grams per watt"

Ok i don't really understand the whole grams per watt concept.People say aim for 1 gram per watt.Is it based on square feet or number of plants?

for example ,with a 250 watt how can i hit 250 grams with 1 plant?

I think 3-4 ounces is a decent pull from 1 plant with this light.. now if i did 2 plants i could maybe get closer to 1grm/pw .

Is it merely ,a target to hit by whatever number of plants possible/necessary and therefore not really applicable when talking about 1 plant? Or is it a target for 1 plant to? even with a light like a 250 with minimal canopy penetration compared to say a 600

It's overall yield from your light + grow area. It's the game of "How many plants can I fit under a . . . .".

i guess if you have 600w you're supossed to get 600 grams. that make any sense? i personally would rather trim than do the math.

Grams per watt is complete non-sense!! You are to tell me, that the average female of Soma Seeds Rock Bud would equal the average yield of Agent Orange from TGA, grams per watt?? You have to be absolutely kidding me.

Running an absolute, 100% indica, low-yielding strain in a 1000-watt room will yield much different results than running a large yielding strain in the same room. Possibly 5 times the yield.

Grams per watt is an absolute joke. You have to learn the strains, learn the wattage, and put the advertising aside. Just my .02!!

I think it's a loosely used term for sure. But in general I think it refers to what a certain lights capabilities are. For example, I pull about 13 oz's on average with my 600w hps. Doesn't matter if its 2 plants or 4 plants, I average 13 oz either way.

So basically I pull about .6 gram per watt using a 600w on average.

But I agree it's kinda bs.

on a VERY efficient grow room you should be able to get 1 gram per watt of light off each plant. this usually only happens when using 1000 watt lights from what ive seen.

That's what I'm thinking.. If you were using a 1k with a very high yeilding strain in optimum conditions you could prob do it.

ive seen a few people on this site do it but never with anything smaller than a 1k.

I can see doing it to give you a general idea of your indoor yield. Depends on how you roll...

Grams per watt is just plain stupid. Yield is equally contingent on a number of factors: light, temp, humidity, water, nutes, CO2/ventilation, genetics, etc.

I tend to count my progress in g/w.

With 400w hps I generally pull 4oz from each plant with each plant no taller than 2ft and I run 4 plants.

I also have a thread on here because alot of folks tried to call BS on me. Its called "my grow room with some cheese."

The biggest factors I have found to increase my yields are....
Environmental control. I have full control over everything except elevated co2 levels as I don't inject co2.

The other is to feed only what can be used by the plant and to not flush.

My best yields have been from keeping my plants green and healthy until I chop them down.

Currently I'm at 1.12g per watt.


Its actually quite funny really because I'm pulling bigger numbers now with a 400w in my space than I did with a 600w in the same space. Lol.

I think it's a matter of following all the small aspects of growing and those can be achieved with study and persistence - maintaining your conditions (temps and humidity), PHing your water and giving the correct dosage of nutes per strain. There are so many small things to pay attention to when growing Marijuana, much like a golf swing - You will yield more as these aspects are done correctly, just as you will yield more yardage and accuracy on your golf shot, as these tiny mechanics are done correctly. I am in no way a pro, this is my first round into the grow world, but I feel if you are crazy interested in the science behind it, you will be the best. I have my 3' plant into flower as of last week, that thing has gone through begginer's trial and it's share of errors, but along the way - I've done my studying and corrected all of my mistakes and she now looks like a queen. I hope to produce way more than 1.5 OZ, I'm planning on 200 grams.. that's half of the 400w setup I have going.

Grams per watt is just a way to tell you how efficiently you are using your space and time.

And no, it isn't BS. You can easily use gram per watt to see how well you are doing with a strain compared to a previous run if your environment is kept the same.

If you run a 1000w and get 500g from your first run, but change the nutes and get 700g the second run with the same 1000w light... you just increased your grams per watt by 20%. It's an easy way to tell if you are doing better or worse.

Take for instance my 300w CFL tent. I pull about 120g every six weeks from it, or right above 1/3g per watt. This next run I am hoping for 160g. That would put me over 1/2g per watt.

I am getting more bud, with the same electricity spent. That is what it is measuring.

I dont even weigh it.

Back in the mid-nineties on the original pot-growing forum, (ADPC) I posted a funny saying that I made up from a TV commercial back then. It was a commercial for California Almonds, and their catch phrase was "A Can a week, that's all we ask."

So I posted "A gram a watt, that's all I ask." It was just something clever to say. Next thing I know the guys on the new OverGrow forum were talking about that as a measure of success. Then it caught on, and it was mentioned on other forums. It has been mentioned ever since then, similar to this thread.

And it starting as a joke has no bearing on whether it's actually a good marker for your runs success...
