hello need a little help cant seem to get my wiring to work have a 12-2 cable ran hook the 3 wires up to an outlet but wont work green black and white i checked it with a voltage meter when green and black are read i have 122 volts and i believe black and white read the same so why dont i have power green is ground correct and i would assue either black is neural or hot and vis versa for the white any suggestions what i might be doing wrong

Black is hot
White is neutral
Green or copper is ground

Voltage black to white is good
voltage black to ground is good
voltage white to ground PROBLEM!

If you have voltage at the outlet but not at the end of the wire you ran, you have an open or bad connection.

Normal power flows via hot and neutral. The ground is for stray voltages. You do NOT want to use the ground for anything other than ground.

hey electrician here. continuity between black to ground is bad... WAY BAD. that would mean a direct short in the line. You should read 120 between white and black.. Make sure black in on the brass screw, white is on silver, and green (or bare copper) is on the green screw or grounded to the box or fixture the splice is made in. With the ciruit off OFF, set your meter to continuity or ohms, put one lead on white and one lead on black ( again make sure the circuit is off ) You should be able to read continuity through them, if not the prob is after the recepticle

ok just double checked between white and green is 125 and between black and green is 125 and between white and black 0 so this means i have a direct short ? since i added a new wire i would assume that the old wire is where the problem is srry i have a cheap meter and didnt seem ohms as a setting thx for the help

sounds like you got power on the white and black giving you 220v. If you check across the white and black i think you will see it. did you say it was an existing outlet?

i checked white and black game me 0 there was an outlet there b4 my dog broke it so i tapeed to that and ran the wire a little longer

if you have 120 from black to green and 120 from white to green and 0 from black to white that tells me you have power on your ground and your black and white are both grounded thats way bad

Is that outlet a known 120V outlet? 220/240 outlets use two 120V lines to give 220/240 volts. There are two 120 volt lines (phase?) going into a house. neutral to any phase gives 120. You measure between both phases and you get 220/240...there for are you sure that outlet is not a 220V?
...or maybe I am reading this wrong.

EDIT: I re-read and yep, I do believe I read it wrong. I thought I saw 220 on black and white.

no i am trying to add outlets 4 my grow room the setting on the meter says ACV then 200 i assume this means alternatin current voltage up to 200 volts but when i connecte the black to white only read

cannabiscrusader thx for ur help i apprciate it worse case ill call my dads electrican and hid the op just hoping to save a little money

he says he reads 0 between white and black, but 120 from black to ground and 120 from white to ground. He must be reading it wrong, cause you shouldnt even be able to turn something like that on. the breaker would just trip

yea the box was connected to pvc pipe and they ran over it and broke the pvc pipe and it was a 125 box and there has been only 3 wires but my dads electrican is the one who put it all in so he should be able to fix it quick since i did all the digging and ran the new conductive pvc pipe already i to do it myself if i have to ill break down and call him tomorow srry this is with the wire connect to the outlet would that change things should i separate them from the outlet and take my readings srry for needing so much explaining
