Earwigs!!

Earwigs......pincher bugs......SATAN!!
They are snacking on the roots in one of my gardens....WTF?!?!?:wall:
Has anybody had any experience in getting rid of these jerks in the root zone?
And if so how did you do it? I barely noticed I had them right now when I was watering. They aren't eating any foliage. They are snacking on the damn roots.
I have just been watering heavily every day, and that seems to make them back off of the roots for a while.
I have always known I had some type of soil dwelling bugs in my planting bed but couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Help would be much appreciated.:leaf:

I have used news papers wet, and pick them up and throw them away 3 - 4 times a day.

OMG I hate earwigs....I have so many of them where I live. I know what you can try:

Take a few containers....like large deli salad containers and 1/2 fill with soy sauce. Poke some holes just big enough for them to fit trough and put a few around your perimeter. They should smell the soy sauce and climb their ways to a salty death.

yea do like ABM said use diatomatcious earth and dont water for a few days as the DE is useless once its wet.

This video is pretty long....but I'm gonna try it to control earwigs in my veggie garden - soy sauce is working so far but this looks way funner and I want "goldmines of dead earwigs in tubes" lol!

In my area earwig's are the bane of many local growers existence. But it is a love hate relationship, sadly they can also be useful little bugger's but there are unstable and eat whatever the see first be it mite or foliage or moistened root mass. Which brings up another question, how is your drainage? When I overwater my patches especially in ground with a high clay content I end up attracting pill bug's, slugs and earwig's. Also the only times I have ever had them prefer to go for my root mass rather than my lower shaded foliage was when a plant had a suffering root system, from one reason or another.

First figure out WHY they have set up a condominium under your plant to keep the problem from returning, a mistake I make still to this day. Band-aiding a issue without fixing the source... Second DE won't wipe em in a flash out like slug's but good ol Diatomecous (sp?) Earth will finish em off just takes a few days.

Don't forget the dust mask when working with DE or Perlite or anything else that can make sharp dust, very bad for the ol' lung's. And good luck with your patch!

Oh and a earwig trap is easy to make, they are various ones using hoses (like the video I noticed was posted while I wrote the original draft of this post.) or by stuffing a few most paper towels into a milk carton wrapped with a dark plastic bag to help prevent light and make the bugger's think they are underground. DE & Traps in combination should clear the plot out pretty quick of the little buggers.
