dwc water level ???? +rep

ok im starting a dwc grow in a 5 g container, FROM SEED. i am not useing a submersable pump, just the air stones. my ? is what lv should the water be at when the seeds are just starting since they do not have a developed root system? i will be growing lowryder that i got from attitude seeds bank. thanks

hey, are you starting the seeds in rockwool?

Water should be roughly halfway up the netpot. When roots appear through hydroton you can gradually lower water level below the netpot.

yeah im gona germ em pp towle style for 24-48 then put em in rock wool.

Be sure to treat the rw before planting your seeds in it btw.

Congrats on using the right system and not the silly water pump and feeder tubes. The answer to your question depends on how much bubble action you have. Test this by putting a netpot setup with hydroton and rockwoon but no seed in and see how wet it get after an hour or so. The idea is for the 100% humidity environment with breaking bubbles and splashing to wet the net pot up far enough to dampen the rockwool. I manage this with the water level an inch below the bottom of the netpot. Others bring it right up to the bottom. Bringing the water level up to the rockwool cube will probably make it too wet. Once you have roots in the water you can lower the water further to make them stretch for the water. But just test and vary it. You want the bottom half of the cube to be good and damp but you don' want the whole cube really wet. When you get this set right it is so much better than feeder tubes which are unreliable and tend to clog up.

Nothing worse than a clogged drip nozzle.

Also, cleaning a bucket system is much easier than cleaning a 20 gal res.

Your question ultimately comes down to what size net pot your using as well. Bottom line is you want the net pot to be retaining water without soaking the roots. Do what Smile said and you will be good to go.
