But a 20a cable is a different connector amd kinda overkill no? 20% over 12A is still under 15A.

It might be ok, seems like the plug ends are usually the weak point on cords.. I would at least make sure it's a quality cord, I've had the ends kind of get burnt out on various cords over the years. that's why I figure a heavier cord would have better plug ends too. You should be able to find a 10ga with regular ends, I have one..

It should be fine, the ac doesn't run at full power constantly and you are under the rating, assuming it's a decent built cord. If anything went wrong the GFCI would trip as soon as it did.

Several years back I had a 14k BTU (1300 watt) dual hose portable I had to run on an extension cord. Everything worked out fine in my case.
I had a 3 prong heavy duty extension cord that was 15ft. Plugged into a GFI outlet. Maybe 12 or 14 gauge. I ran it for a year and half without any issue. Even had it tied into a titan temp control device.

Thanks. This is this anecdotal evidence I came here for. I used to do stage lighting for concerts before LEDs. I have run my fair share of high wattage incandescent lamps on very long extention cords with no issue.
