I just hung my guys now...im waiting to jar them....is it normal for them to lose that pungent smell during the drying process and will it come back during the curing process??

Its my second time and just curious!!

Yes, the smell will return. But a lot of it will also have to do with whether or not you flushed your plants properly. Plants can smell dank whether they are full of nutrients or not while fresh, but it's another story as they start to dry. What you could be experiencing now is smelling them sweat out a nutrient concentrated moisture. If you DID flush properly, then this could just be normal and yes, it's natural odor & aroma will return. How well you go about this process will also determine to what degree it comes back. As iampolluted said, you don't want to let them dry out TOO MUCH before jarring, otherwise it will turn out to be very brittle, less fragrent cannabis. I aim for 3, maybe 4 days of hang drying before I start to trim. And at this point, a lot of the time they will still have a lil longer to go. It's just a good time to handle and start working on all that. As the trimming process can delay you from jarring on time if you don't do it all in a proper timeframe. As I trim the buds, they will go into a bowl or some brown paper bags for another couple days, and I will gently mix them around to make sure there's no moisture buildup as they continue to dry. After this point, they are about ready for jarring. I lightly fill each jar so there's plenty of room for them to breathe & sweat without causing mold risks. Then on a daily basis, I will "burp" the lids as some like to call it, leaking air for atleast an hour and then sealing again. Prob best to do this 2-3 times a day the first couple days, then once for the next week before you really start to notice it is approaching a quality cure. From there, the longer you cure the more vintage it gets. I've gone into my golf bag before and found chocholate raspberry, sour diesel, ... in the past that had to of been over 6 months old and while the cannabinoids can degrade slightly, I remember still getting blazed and the taste was incredible and better than ever.

Hope this helps! +rep??? =)

Flush flush flush....

Use a digestive enzyme on final flush...sold at all grow shops.

Most people weed looks and smells great until they dry and cure it...and this is where you can tell how well the flush went. Funny smelling and funky burning are clear signs of an inadequate flush..

A proper flush can make all the difference..

While drying and curing it should go through that mown grass/ hay smell but there should also still be an subtle overtone of the plant smell that was there before harvest.

Something I learned the hard way...flush flush flush...

If your growing in a plastic pot with dirt...bang on the sides of the pot lightly with a hammer while flushing..this will break up any funky clumps ( all soil will clump) and aim for 5 to 1 gallons on final flush. Using an enzyeme will allow any remaining nutes to bond with the enzymes and remove all nutes.

In other words just keeping flushing until it comes out crystal clear...

Hydro..flush the media completely ( shower works good ) and have only pure water 2 weeks before harvest...flush the media again each week..shaking the media around to remove any hot spots.

Flushing properly is the most important thing to do to get good smelling, good tasting and good burning smoke.

You can use a drying box for hanging...just a card board box with a hole ( about the size of your fist ) on each side...string some wire across the top and hang the buds...close lid. ( Seal any other gaps with tape..besides the holes of course) You do need to make sure there is a slight airflow through the box..not enough to dry them out too fast..but enough to keep them from getting mold. A small desk fan set on one side of the box blowing indirectly into the hole is usually good enough.

Too hard to tell ... Unless it was a purple variety or something with a very unique characteristic, there are just too many hybrids out there these days to blindly call it.

I can tell you tho that if those pics were right before you pulled that they were pulled way too early. The hairs are all white and the buds clearly have a lot of weight to gain. Most varieties grown outdoors do not completely finishing til mid-late October. You can tell for sure by checking the hairs/thrichomes all over the plant. The hairs will go from white to a pink/red/orange, changing to more of a dark brown/amber color as they approach being done. The trichomes before finishing will be standing up in kinda a perked up, mushroom shape, with a clear tint. These when finished will start to curl and go from clear to cloudy, or even amber in which they'll have more of a couch lock.

Let us know how much dry weight you end up with, and hopefully this info helps next time around when you harvest. You'll be shocked with the results of a lil patience. =)

Cheers
