I've been wanting to try out this technology, but they are expensive and you can't transplant out of them from what I can tell. Could I not simply drill a bunch of holes in the sides of containers and achieve the same results?, or does the curvature of these products actually make a difference?.

Also, I have some 1 gallon smart pots here(the fabric ones). I can't use them b/c I move my plants a lot unless I were to bury one in a 5 gal bucket. Has anyone ever tried this?. I think I've seen folks bury smart pots in the ground, so I'm guessing that in theory it works.
