Drill Vs. Air Pots

I've been wanting to try out this technology, but they are expensive and you can't transplant out of them from what I can tell. Could I not simply drill a bunch of holes in the sides of containers and achieve the same results?, or does the curvature of these products actually make a difference?.

Also, I have some 1 gallon smart pots here(the fabric ones). I can't use them b/c I move my plants a lot unless I were to bury one in a 5 gal bucket. Has anyone ever tried this?. I think I've seen folks bury smart pots in the ground, so I'm guessing that in theory it works.

dont see why you cant transplant if anything its easyer, just take the clips out and the pot 'unrolls', theres more to it then holes in a container.
