DR90 ventilation setup in bedroom - please help - earn +rep

Im looking to setup a DR90 tent in my bedroom with a 600w hps. Im trying to work out ventilation. There is only a vertical slider type window in the room(with one of these similar old-style vents on it - http://www.sealfix.co.uk/WebRoot/BT...B/855D/0A0C/05E9/ECAA/simon_vent_controll.jpg) no other openings/vents and the door cannot be left open. Its also ground floor and rented so I cant modify anything much.

Im trying to work out how to do the ventilation. Im looking to get a roller blind for the window and leave the window open maybe 6inches, but Id have to seal up the roller blind as Id be worried of people being able to move it and see the DR90. I will have to run a 6inch for exhaust with acoustic ducting and im going to have to sound-proof the fan as much as I can as I sleep in this room also if the window will be open 24/7 I dont want loads of noise leaking out. I just cant work out how to ventilate this properly and safely. Also any suggestions on soundproofing a 6inch ruck high speed fan? (i will be using a fan controller with it also). Im also thinking of using a air-cooled hood without the use of another extraction fan, in the following setup--> carbon filter to hood to extraction fan. (or I could use another fan IF I can get the noise level to bareely audiable)

Another thought I had was ripping up one of the wooden floor panels and extracting or intaking from there, but I had a look outside and there doenst seem to be any vents under the floor, so it will just be like having underfloor heating if I vent under there.... I think?? Or would it disperse well if the floor is well sealed?

Also another thought I had was using One-Way Window Mirror Film or similar on the window and leave the gas vent open on the window, but does that one way film look "dodgy", do many people use it for legitimate uses?

Is there anyway I could setup something at the window where I can vent out of it but from the outside you wouldnt know (not much noise and visually looks "normal" from the outside), if I could do that I could just use passive intake for the DR90 and exhaust out the window. id also need it to be light proof as I would have the lights on at night, so I can only do work at night in the tent, dont want a big glow leaving the room when I open the tent.

The other option I have thought of is a sealed grow - CO2 and an AC unit. But can you use CO2 in a DR90 and still sleep in the room? My experience with DR tents is that they are not fully airtight and have some small leaks, I wouldnt want to be sleeping in the room with CO2 leaking out. Also CO2 isnt really available where I am, how much CO2 would a DR90 sized grow use roughly every 2-3 months?

Its doing my head in trying to think of the best/safest way and that will give decent enough ventilation.

for sound proofing the inline fan i would use a phresh duct silencer, and maby some insulated ducting

Thanks for the reply. I will be using insulated ducting, but the phresh duct silencer isnt really of any use to silence the actual fan itself.


I was thinking of a carboard box filled with expanding foam or some sort of sound proofing material, then I will just throw a lfew clothes or blankets on top of the box, would that work?

from my experience the wooshing of the air is what makes them noisy, with a speed controller and a duct silencer it makes them pretty silent. the phresh silencer claims 70 percent noise reduction on small and 50 with the big fans. google phresh duct silencer and look and some of the videos they have on the net. A box around the fan and insulation would make it even more quiet i would think, never tried tho.

Thanks for the info, I had a look at the phresh silencer, looks good, though Ive heard people talking shit about them before, saying they are a waste of money, I'd love to see one in the flesh to judge it though. Id love to have a 2nd fan for the air-cooled hood, but that is just more noise. If I can get the fans to run REALLY silently then I wouldnt mind having 2 in a larger cardboard box that was silenced, it wouldnt take up that much more space in a box.

The problem is Ive nowhere to sdend the exhaust air from 2 fans.

Has anyone ducted the exhaust under their wooden floor (I actually think its that fake plastic wood) with no vents under the floor? I'd be worried about mould and condensation, but the floor surface area might be enough to disperse the air nicely if it was forced under the floor at high velocity.

How big is the bedroom and how close to your head is the closet? I take it that the fan is suspended on bungee cords?

Ive slept in a room with 3x oscillating fans and 2x 8" high power ruck fans (in insulated boxes) and a large air pump in the room beside me and it was pretty annoying trying to sleep with them.

I will also be running a large 130 lph air pump outside the DR90 which is loud enough, Il have to find a way of silencing that aswell, while still allowing airflow into it, thats another issue :(

The closet is a 5x5 and I got a 3x3 tent, my bed is maybe 25ft from it. I got hvac zip ties holding it

ah ok that makes sense, my tent will be about 6-9 foot max from my head, maybe closer :) that is why everything has to be silenced A LOT. And the cable ties dont vibrate?? Ive always used rubber myself.. I must look into those cable ties.

No not that I know of. Even if I walk up to it, I don't really hear it but of course I got a cover hanging over the entrance so people don't see my tent and the closet has a window built in so heat isn't a problem. I just hang the blanket over the entrance and I don't even hear it at all through any of my walls.

Yeh I'll definitly be hanging some cover over the tent to stop noise, but usually it still is too loud to sleep. But then again, even a pc fan is too much noise for me to sleep :) You any pics of your setup/grow journal?

Sorry but I think the best thing to do is move. This sounds like your first rodeo and I think some of your hurdles are impossible to overcome. Here's why, and I'm not trying to sound like a dick:

-It hasn't even been mentioned here but you'll have heat issues during summer months with that much light in a dr90. It can be done but you're asking for problems. A 400 watt would serve you much better.

-If you say you can barely sleep with a computer fan on then there's no way you're going to be able to sleep with any kind of high velocity fan, speed contoller or not. You're also not going to be able to extract outside without everybody knowing what you're doing. I can see it now, "what's going on in that room, with the mirrored window that has hot air gushing out." You may as well put up a sign that says "I'm growing."

-speaking of speed controllers, I know people may say they're great but I've done some research on the subject and my findings are that the cheap ones suck and can be a serious fire hazzard. In fact, some fans won't work right with some speed controllers. I'd rather see you with a 4 inch fan and no speed controller with the dr90 wherever you grow.

-you keep mentioning venting into a floor. I think you're underestimating how much air comes out of a high speed fan. Go to a grow shop and have them demo one for you and you'll see what I mean. They sound like a jet taking off.

-on a side note: You don't need Co2 for a few plants in a dr90. Get good genetics and ferts and you'll do fine.

-you're renting. That means you'll have unplanned visits, sometimes without warning. You'll be in mid flower and the maintenance guy will have to come over and fix something and you'll be screwed.

all in all I think the biggest obstacle is going to be the noise from the air gushing out of the fan. People will walk by and it's going to be so obvious. Also, traces of the smell are very noticable and carbon filters can't do miracles. If you're so close to traffic walking by that you think someone could touch your window it's just too risky. Humans can smell one molecule and the smell in very distinguishable.

Sorry, but you can't grow safely where you are currently living IMO.

Geez man, did you even read my posts in this thread??

- This aint my first rodeo. Last setup was a dr240w with 2x 600w hps, 36 plant hydro setup, that was run for 3 years and various soil grows before that ranging from 600w-1000w

- You say that as if you know the climate I live in. I know people already running 600's in DR90's and it can definitly be done. In fact its quite a popular setup on loads of forums.

-Did you not read my post above about sleeping in a room with 2x 8inch extraction fans etc?? I can sleep with the noise, it just takes a lot longer to fall asleep. Ive also grown with open windows on ground floors before with no issues, it can be done stealthily, I'm not some little kid doing his first grow. I asked about the mirror sheeting as it was mentioned on this forum before. The window I am using is tucked away and no one EVER walks by it, it is facing the back of a house (a garden), basically weedy soil below my window that no one would have a reason to walk on and lots of tall trees surrounding the garden. Stealth is always key though, ive never had anything suspicious looking in previous setups, hence the reason no one ever suspected a thing, not even mates that were in the flat in the room next to the setup.

- lol, I dont agree about the fan controller comment. I have used them before, once you get a decent one that isnt some cheapass knock off one, they dont have the same issue, no buzzong of fans etc or fire hazzard LOL. Have you ever used one? 4inch wont cut it with a 600w hps, best to use a decent fan controller with a bigger fan as it is less noisey and can push more air if needs be.

Also if you get a decent rhino filter with no air leaks there isnt any trace of smell, 5+ years of growing have proven that to me. Also that is what negtive air pressure is all about

From the sounds of it I might even have more experience than you as it is.. but Im not going to assume that.... Come back when you have read the thread and have some decent suggestions. i only have one response and is one u see me say many time threw out the forum, "Variac Controller" for all brushless fan<99% of inlines> normal controllers dont slow the fan properly so with or with out the hum you are hurting ur fan and putting yourself in danger. dish out the extra and get it right the first time. idk what controller you are using or plan too just saying. see alot of ppl recommending the wrong type of controller to ppl jus cuz it is cheaper.

totally agree, the cheaper types are basically just variable resistors which mean converting some power to heat. i only use decent fan controllers, especially with decent fans, as the cheap controllers can blow your fans also

Here's a suggestion karmermoron, why don't you stop contradicting yourself.

When you get your panties out of a bunch you should check it out. Thanks for the laugh and with the types of contradictory statements you make don't ever take the stand if you ever end up in court for anything.

Basically as not being caught is No.1 priority I am just think of all possibilities, The window is hidden and no one walks by it, it wouldnt stop me worrying about a thief or vandal etc.

This is also not a molecule of weed, its a totally different compound, very specific in fact. Humans can definitly not smell one molecule of all odour molecules Are you saying that humans can smell 1 molecule of weed smell (terpins or whatever molecule causes the smells.) in maybe in billion or one million?
