It's not healthy to use dog or cat shit in compost intended for edible (or smokable) crops. It can pass on diseases and parasites to your plants. The possible benefits just don't justify the risk.

Maybe if it laid fallow for a few years, it might become safer to use. I don't know for sure, though.

Any crap from a meat eating animal, as mentioned before, will transfer all the disease, bacteria, etc to the plant. It is not good to use for edible or smokable crops. There is not just one or two of us against it, science is against it as well.

Few facts on dog shit....

Dog food has a lot of grains, cereals etc. Probably a better diet than what you eat.

Unless your dog has an issue, in which case you should see a vet, there isn't likely to be much in dog shit to die from. When was the last time you heard of someone dying from dogshit? Hell, little kids love playing with the stuff. It gets smeared over shoes, stomped across floors, even put in paper bags and set on fire, yet the papers are not full of death by dogshit. The whole you'll get parasites if you use dogshit is BS. Any parasite living in your dogs gut won't do well when composted and mixed with coco.

Dogshit is very hot.. mondo high in N so some people may claim it doesn't work as fertilizer, but they just didn't compost it long enough. When choosing dog shit, you want something which is fully dry and partially broken down. Grab a handfull and squeeze. It should crumble in your hand. If goo squeezes out between your fingers it is too fresh. Give it a month.

You can't use dog shit straight because it is too hot and lacks certain ingredients. Mix your dry hand crumbled dog shit with some organics like leftover foods, rotten fruit, bananna peels, spaghetti etc. and let it all break down and mulch. When you can no longer tell the difference between a bananna peel and dog shit, it is ready to go.

Mix your dog shit mulch at least 50/50% with coco. Don't go over half full with dogshit because even at this decomposed stage it is very potent.

I have always worked with dog shit from dogs who eat dry dog food. Having smelled dog shit from dogs which eat wet food I would either not use that, or maybe first bake it in the oven at 175 F for about 2.5 hours to properly pasteurize.

Short of Hydro, nothing beats dog shit. Some of my best dog shit buds were the most crystal covered buds I've ever seen. It got me so high I felt like running around through the woods and peeing on trees.

I have considered a mixture of 5% pure dog shit and 95% coco for hydro but I haven't gotten up the guts to try it yet.

So unless you have actually grown with dog shit yourself shut up about this it will kill you or give you rabies crap.

I will never try this, think about trying this, or recommend it to other people.

Seriously now I have to ask...just what on earth was going through your mind when you made this thread?

Processed dog food is shit. most dry dog foods out there if you actually read up on it are grains, processed and leftover grains among other processed crap. most processed dry dog food is actually not all that great for your dog.

Does everyone here pick up their dogs shit? Does it kill your lawn? NO. In fact if you have a healthy yard it will be broken down in no time. One way of having a healthy lawn is letting shit breakdown and feed it. Kinda like mother nature planned it that way or something. Compost your dog shit correctly, ie get it nice and hot and keep turning it, apply, and enjoy.

You do not use any animal that eats meat. A good way to turn the energy of canavoir poo into fert is to use black soldier flies then feed them to either fish or chickens when they puplate. Cool thing is when they puplate they shed their skin and are clean of the ecolie and other bacteria.

They can be self harvesting and quite veracious. Some use the to dispose of dog poo as well.
Here is what they do to a hamburger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaoVBlS8iVA

Unlike worms they can eat meats and a variety of other scraps. Really cool thing is they give off an odor that repels the normal house fly. All they want to do is eat as larve and breed and as adults. As adults they do not have mouths to eat with so they do not have an interest in anything human just getting laid. Ahhh if life were only that easy!!

Just go find a pasture with a horse and dont use fresh make sure its been in the field, it will start to turn white that is when you want it. Loaded with nitrogen. Great for vegging
