So I have a dilemma,

I can order everything online and pay way less then my hydro store or I can support my guy. The thing is though it's like everything he quotes me I can find online either 5-100 bucks cheaper. For instance all of my nutes from him would have cost me 110ish. All of my nutes online + shipping is costing me 94 with a 10 dollar coupon.

Do I pay his prices to support him or find a better store? The problem is he doesn't make any money if he drops the prices. He tried to sell me a 1000w ballast + hood for like 400 bucks. Found both for 200 and bought two instead.

I know it can be a toss up... Maybe your local shop would honor competitor prices? Im sure he doesn't make much but giving a deal on products here and there shouldn't break his bank unless he consistently gives EVERYONE "deals" which in that case would make them horrible at operating a business. Your local shop is still getting product at wholesale cost like everyone else dependent on the quantity in which they buy and sell... The difference in retail and wholesale is all about what they are using for markup... Also supply and demand. Does your local shop also sell their products on a website as well as in store?

No website, just in store and I'm on the east coast in a tiny town and he's expressed to me before that he needs a second job to keep the shop open.
I'll ask if he'll honor competitive prices but I'm not sure lol. If he's working two jobs to keep the store open he might be broker then me.

Prices online are more competitive than in store. I try but the last time in Liquid Sun I asked about an item that was out of stock and he said that he would have it in a few days. I said I'll be back then and he had a look like no you won't and the conversation stopped and he turned and started pretending to work. I left and will not go back. Daddy owns the store so he don't give a rats azz.

No website and struggles to stay in business? If he's causing himself more harm than good financially then he shouldn't be open. I wouldn't be anyways. I run my own business and it took me at least 3 years to become established! But then again i am a residential contractor and his business lies in a pretty gray area... I feel a lot of shops don't get good business because people are either too scared or feel intimidated by these shops because we all know what they really sell their products for! Sure there's a few indoor tomato growing hobbyists but they normally can Just go to a box store for what they need.

I agree! Someone was saying that they wouldn't go to the hydro store because it's being watched. LOL.

My shop is knowledgeable but expensive. The problem with brick and mortar retail vs. online is the brick and mortar part. So many regulations on opening up a retail store, in most states, they can't make it a lot of the time. I try to buy stuff there just because I support local business generally. I don't know if they care much, though, because the hours they are open are all during my day job, they close too early and open too late. Real nice husband and wife team, but I think they need to try harder by being open more or different hours. I think they would do more business, because a lot of us have day jobs, in the real world.

Yup definately not an easy road and dont plan on getting rich from it. but if i could pay my bills and eat everyday with a little left over each month, and do something i love then id be happy. I guess thats everybody's goal though, to be able to do something you love while making money.

As my state is not legal only the big cities have grow shops. This sucks. Even for gardening or flower beds we have no choice for soil and amendments. We are stuck with miracle grow and Scotts. That's why I grow organic. I compost and have worm bins. We use the manure from our chickens and cows. I get alfalfa from Tractor Supply.


For these reasons I thought about starting a nursery/grow supply store. Sell a range or organic and synthetic alike. Give this community something different than the big box monopoly stores.

You can't even find a place that sells bulk soil like promix.

Agreed! That's how most local shops are! Closed when its convenient. Good to know you support local small business when possibly. At least you make an effort but for your specific reason i could fully understand why you would order from the net

This is EXACTLY the reason i work for myself! Im outside all day building things! Its a great feeling of accomplishment seeing your results while enjoying what you do!

That's Just crazy to me... You would think in this Day and age that it wouldn't be considered "Just a weed store" but more of a specialty gardening shop that carries what isn't in box stores. Good thing you are organic! I would love to compost maybe next year and eventually get a quality mix that i can use the year following! I was also thinking of building my own worm bin to make my own casting tea... But we'll see.

That i do! Not really living anything... Construction is very cut throat but i find a way to make it work! That's because i want it that bad! I should start building grow rooms lol i bet i could make a killing if i could somehow tap a gray market lol
