Does this setup make sense?

Hi all,

I am a first time grower, prop 215 patient. I ordered a mini-cool cab because I was getting overwhelmed at all of the choices that I had, and I didn't really want to do a lot of DIY stuff to get started. At the time that I ordered the cab, I was expecting that it would arrive in about a week.

It's taken a bit longer than that, so I got impatient and started looking for clones at a few of the clubs that I usually go to in SF and Oakland. I found fairly established clones (they are in 4" pots) and decided to pick one up and just use a little natural light along with a 25 watt ott light full spectrum cfl to veg. I set the plant by a south facing window in the day time with the cfl on above it and used a styrofoam cooler to reflect a bit more light.

After talking with the folks at the co-op and picking up The Medical Grow Bible, I decided that hydro is a bit risky for my first grow, so I am going to go with soil. My plan is to veg this clone into a mother and take clones and put them into the hydro. In order to keep a mother, I decided to set up a corner of a closet, so I went to the local hydro shop (I'd already been 3 times before, but I didn't know enough to figure out where to start). This time, I was on a mission, though, I was going to find a light suitable for vegging. My preference was CFL because I want something high efficiency that won't burn by clone.

The guy at the shop was very helpful and suggested that I grab a t5 unit instead. I got a 24" with 4 blue bulbs. I also decided that the 4" pot was not going to last me too much longer, so I got a 3 gallon pot (which will shouldn't be too big for the mini cab, but I'll figure it out). I also grabbed a bag of Foxfarm ocean forest, which he recommended. I am not planning to grow a lot of soil grows (I live in a condo, so the I'm going to have to go with the shawshank technique for this go-round), so I wasn't enthused at the size of the bag, but I figure that it gives me options.

The strain is purple punch, which I know very little about, but the plants looked healthy (from my limited knowledge). I noticed some small brown spots after I moved the plant to the bathroom at night (the office it was in during the day is not light sealed so the light would show out the window). I was worried about the plant drying out too much, so I ran the shower a little bit to put a little steam/humidity in the air. This was a mistake, I'm guessing, since I noticed what I think is heat stress (small brown spots on some of the leaves), the biggest fan leaf is also folded down slightly at the edges, which is a bit concerning, so I turned on a fan and pointed it away from the plant slightly to get some air circulation. I need to pick up an oscillating fan, but haven't had a chance yet, so I'm working with what I have. There seem to be a lot of bud sites on the plant, so I used some thread and pins to spread out the branches a bit, and I just wanted to check out my setup to make sure there are no really obviously bone-headed mistakes.

may want to move that plant alittle closer to the light(assuming its rooted) cfls and floro's can be alot closer to your plants then hid lights... good rule of thumb is if its to hot for the back of your arm its too hot for the plant.. as far as soil mix's go if you check the grow faq im pretty sure they have some suggetions in there as well as on youtube... just search how to grow or something and a bunch of marijuana related links will pop up with step by step instructions explaining everything you need to know and the soil grow videos will show the soil mix that grower prefers..

Thanks! I put a couple books under to get it closer. I was worried I was too far from the light, but the chains wouldn't go any lower and I couldn't figure out a way to raise the box enough. Are the thread tie-downs useful or am I just stressing her unneccessarily?

dont know what your refering to, if your refering to LST then you can do that if you want to keep the plant low in height and veg it for awile... if your just gonna flower it right away you prolly dont need to lst(unless limited in height) if your just trying to increase yeild then look into growing teq part of the faq and lok around at supercropping lst toping fim scrog ect... and see which looks best to you

Personaly i wouldnt use a CFL, havent used them for years now but when i did it was to only stableise the clones, and when they were Vegged or put into flower i would only use a 400w HPS.

I would only recommend a CFL for baby seedlings starting off or clones but as soon as they are ready, put them under a HPS.

Also the mayjor downside of CFLs is the yeild, you end up with such smalll nugs.

Get yourself a HPS. :peace:

Thanks, I agree that CFLs are not going to work as well for me as a HPS or MH. I ordered a mini cool cab a week ago and then got impatient, so the CFLs are really a temporary measure, intended for a bit of vegging. The cab comes with a 400 watt HPS/MH fixture which I will use as soon as it arrives.

If I decide to keep this as a mom, can I survive under CFL or do I need another HID light?

Well you can have a mother kept in vegg useing a CFL but a main issue with mother plants is that as they get bigger they tend to need more light, and even in veg if they dont get the right amount of light then you will see issues.

CFLs are ok for the moment but as soon as you cab somes with the 400w then put them streight in. I would also put them in bigger potts maybe 10lt or bigger if you can.

Cool, thanks. I have a 3 gal pot and I was thinking about transplanting tonight, but I am still reading up on transplanting (like I said, I was prepping for a hydro grow).

Persoanly i would stick with soild grows, the best weed in the world is grown in soil, i think anyway. Easy to transplant, do that star treak sign with your hand, plants bottom of stem in middle of your star treak sign, turn upside down so pot is in air then tapp and gentaly pull, works for me and i havent had any probs re-potting for the last 3 years :) :peace:

I appreciate it. I've got her in a 3 gal pot now with Ocean Forest soil. I've got pics if anyone is interested. Should I start a journal instead? I have gotten progressively more invested in this financially, first I bought some 42 watt cfls, mylar, a 2' 4 bulb t5, and ahem, a 600 watt hps in a 19" cooltube, light yoyos, and a fan that I'm currently using incorrectly (it's a duct fan but I don't have any ducts hooked to the lights right now). I cleared out that section of the closet since my cool cab STILL hasn't arrived yet. I haven't even received the shipping notification. I'm considering cancelling since they (SunLight) have been totally unresponsive. The parts that I'm mainly interested from them are still attractive to me which is the only reason I didn't cancel today. I really just want to get one grow under my belt (and then another, and another and you get the idea ;)).

See the only bad bit of that is the $$$ you have put in, no matter what you get off your grow you are gonna price it up to the amount you have put into your grow. (if you catch my drift) i wouldnt splash out to much not on your first attempt. Its a bit bad that Sunlight hasnt yet delivered on what you have paid for, not unless they are building it from scratch. Email them and ask whats going on.

Also i would def set up a grow journal just so that people can coimment on what your doing and it will better your grow as you can get as much advice as you want.

Also if you need any help m8 let me know! :peace:

Yeah, I'm not all that concerned about sinking a little bit into this up front (I'm spending a fair amount on meds right now, and I'd like to reduce that cost as soon as it's feasible). It hurts a little bit to be spending so much money, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the long run. Hopefully I'll hear from them today so that I don't have to make any tough decisions about whether to go through with the order. I still think I'm going to need it for flowering because my closet is not completely sealed at this point which will take some extra effort. I've got mylar on the floor, but mylar actually makes the room brighter.

Anyway, here's my grow https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/189810-first-time-grow-purple-punch.html

Yeah, got a visit yesterday and had to hide everything out, gonna get big! Starting to smell a little, so if they don't get their act together soon, I am going to have to cancel the order. As it is, I could technically cancel it because they violated the FTC's Mail Order rule, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and give them another couple days to respond (I bought it through an ebay store, but I think it's sunlight's own store, I contacted the seller). Just added a few more pics.
