Does Temperature Turn Plants Purple??

I've had plenty of grows where they didn't purple up or only some did, so it's a mystery to me. It's proof of something, that's for sure.
Yes I notice it on some more than others. Usually after I’ve trained them and exposed the stems. Some sort of response to UVA/B I guess?

I've grown plenty of purple weed. Not once did I ever lower the temperature for the purple to show up. Cold temps can cause purple leaves but once you trim those away you're usually left with green bud. Purple genetics will have purple flowers regardless of temperature. Referencing @PJ Diaz post regarding PCK, It will purple regardless of temp and if it doesn't it's a green pheno. The green pheno is also better in every aspect than the purple/red phenos. I spent around three years working the purple out of a PCK cross I made. Even though I started with a green pheno the purple kept coming back. It took until F5 to get rid of it. Now I have a nice stable PCK/Durban that grows green from seed almost 100% of the time.

From my experience purple weed is inferior.

Not true. My GDP never purpled up in the summer, but did in the winter. Buds, not leaves.

What's not true? I did put "usually" in this statement I made:

"Cold temps can cause purple leaves but once you trim those away you're usually left with green bud."

As for the GDP, I've never grown it. Most of the purple weed I've grown has been indoors with temps never getting cold. It's just not a factor that I've ever needed for purple weed. But I'll take your word for it and stand corrected.

I was mostly addressing, "Purple genetics will have purple flowers regardless of temperature." I was running legit seeds of Ken's GDP too. It was a pretty weak strain though. I don't think purple equals less potency so much these days, but it's true for most strains that have been around for 10+ years.

I did this a while ago. The pigment comes from anthocyanin, which only reveals from a cold drop after chlorophyll breaks down, which will lower the ability your plant has to photosynthesis and ends up being detrimental to overall quality. A true Purp needs no cold drop and begins turning purple around week 2 of flower usually. Tropicana Cherry #8 for example.

Keep in mind that GDP was largely grown outdoors when it was named, so it's reasonable to question whether or not it's really a genetically purple strain, or if it's just one of those strains that purples up in low temps.
I'm starting to think ALL modern polyhybrids nowadays have the propensity to purp-out.
Nah. I got through a pretty cold grow a month or so ago, and it was two related strains: Gush Mints, and Mango Mintility (Gush Mints x Mango Haze). The Gush Mints purpled up real nice, as it always does, but the Mango Mintility stayed green.

In a strain that has green and purple phenos this 100% makes sense when you consider how efficient green is vs purple for photosynthesis so it stands to reason the better a plant is at that the better a smoke its gonna be i find its always the case i have still yet to smoke a purple that was stronger than its green counterpart in any strain

the purple blush comes from anthocyanins. these are antioxidants, they are not cannabinoids, and they are not psychoactive, they are purely window-dressing.

Ive also found temps dont make a difference as far as strains getting purple.

Only problem I had this last run with my purple strain is the top half was purple and the bottom half was green under my 650w LEDs. The plant was ~4ft. I defoliated at day 21 but never did it again.

Im thinking the buds need strong enough light to turn color or maybe another defoliation after Day 21 towards the end. My side plants also didnt turn purple. They were at the edge of the flood table and the lights a 4x4.

Do you guys get your whole tree to have purple nugs or 50/50 like I did. Is it a defoliation issue or the actuall PPFD has to be strong enough to change the bud's color?

Purple traits is down to genetics. If a plant purple from deficiency it's not a purple strain per say.

I agree. Im wondering why my 4ft plant is purple the first 2ft and green the bottom 2ft. Could it be a defoliating issue or does the ppfd have to hit a certain number for the bud to actually turn purple for the lower portion

Until you grow a Green Haze vs a Pure Purple Haze .
Smoked both back in the day also tried oldtimers one too its different from the green phenos i wouldnt classify it as more potent however just different kinda like the way with aces panama the red has different effects from the green godess side of things reds more stoney vs the green more uplifting
